From the Minister's Study
Try church on Holy Week, it may change you
By Rev. Gary Clark

United Churches
Let's get ready because Holy
Week is just ahead! Holy Week is the
eight days including Palm Sunday,
when Jesus came into Jerusalem
with the joyous crowds shouting
"Save us, we pray," to his death on
Friday, and than finally to his
resurrection on Easter morning.
I know, I know, for most people
today this doesn't mean much more
than a Monday off. The question in
the minds of many is what does the
death of this guy Jesus 2000 years
ago have to do with me? A good
question that asks if there is a God,
what does it matter to me?
Well, as a minister and a person of
faith I answer, `lots.' For example
let's look at any individual's health.
A person can run, or swim or work
out to keep the body healthy but any
top notch athlete will tell you that
there is a `spirit' that you must tap
into to go beyond what the body
alone can achieve.
In group dynamics the same thing
goes. The collective talents of any
group of individuals is only better
when there is a `spirit' present. This
`spirit' cannot be measured by any
instrument or felt by any of the
body's senses but it can be seen in
the results it produces and how
people feel inside as they work
together.
Then there is mental health.
Statistics tell us that the levels of
life-threatening depression, of dis-
ease with one's life and fear about
the future are out of control. Suicide
and hopelessness stalk every
generation in our country. I believe
that this is a physical/ mental
symptom for a spiritual crisis.
The ability to have hope in that
which is not readily obvious or even
realistically possible is of a spiritual
nature. The ability to forgive

ourselves our faults is a spiritual gift.
The ability to forgive others and
even the world when they and it
doesn't give us what we think we
need is spiritual. The ability to be
content, to be calm and to be in the
present (not fixated on either the past
or future) is a spirit journey.
I believe that this God and this
Jesus have a tremendous amount to
offer each of us in our physical and
mental lives.
First, the Bible and every major
faith remind us that we are not
perfect but rather are a work in
progress. We can let go of the guilt
of imperfection because we simply
cannot attain perfection in this
life. Perfection only exists in the
eyes of those who love us. And
regardless of who else is in your life
that might fill that bill, God will

love you and me perfectly.
We need not feel alone. We need
not feel beyond forgiveness. We
need not feel like we have to prove
something or be somebody else.
God knows us and loves us as we
are.
Now, that doesn't mean that God
isn't going to nudge us toward
greater happiness and contentment
or into making decisions that are
better for ourselves and the world
than we might make by ourselves.
God is like a good father or good
mother who just wants the best for
us.
In Holy Week, we see the hopes of
everyday people like you and me.
They are drawn to Jesus because
they sense that he has the ability and
willingness to save them spiritually,
emotionally and physically. There

was something in how he lived,
cared, cured and taught that told
them he was of God. I have seen,
heard and feel that truth in myself as
well. And in case you doubt it, the
last days of Jesus' life are worse than
anything we can imagine. It has
betrayal, desertion, torture and
death, yet he does not stop loving the
betrayers, the torturers and those
who are killing him slowly.
Easter is a reminder that even
death doesn't have the last word and
need not control our future. Only
God and the power of God could do
that in humans like us!
What I am trying to get at is that
happiness and contentment even in
the struggling times of life is
possible with the aid of God. To give
up on God is to give up on ourselves
and the joy we deserve.
I invite you to go to church, any
church, this Holy Week. See, hear
and feel what I am talking about. Try
it, you're worth it. There is a chance
that it will change your life, whereas
staying home definitely won't.
