The Citizen, 2016-03-17, Page 10PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 2016. Auburn chosen as venue for special guest speaker PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN By Mark Royal! Call 519-441-2223 I'm giddy. I am giddy for Auburn. So now you are wondering why. I will be glad to tell you. Back in January I did an informal and anonymous survey of our congregation at Huron Chapel asking them about some of the teaching areas they would like to cover in the coming year. The number one response was this, they wanted to live a more effective life as a Christian. Because this survey was anonymous, I didn't ask people to sign their names because I wanted real answers. I knew this was a real heartfelt need. I remember hearing a fellow by the name of Bob Goff speak at a conference I attended in southern California a number of years ago. After hearing Bob speak I was very inspired to do something bigger in relationship with God. I also remember laughing a lot. (Mark Royal' photo) Council strikes police committee By Denny Scott The Citizen North Huron Township Council is pursuing all the facts before trying to make a decision regarding policing throughout the township. During council's March 7 meeting, a Policing Advisory Committee was established consisting of Wingham Police Chief Tim Poole, North Huron Polcie Services Board (NHPSB) Chair/North Huron Councillor Trevor Seip, Reeve Neil Vincent and NHPSB member Bill Gregoriadis. The board, which will be working with the support of North Huron staff and alongside representation from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will develop terms of reference, to be approved by council in the future, that will be attached to the bylaw that created the group. The board will be responsible for looking at the costing of OPP coverage, which has increased in most municipalities throughout Ontario, versus the cost of the Wingham Police Service. If previous council discussions are an indicator of the purpose of the board, the committee could look at having the Wingham Police Service expand to the other wards of the municipality, look at abolishing the Wingham Police Service or a reality somewhere between the two. !C•,LionSCluboiAuburn y/tm„41L2016 uaeyzi4 95 #20 7‘ -td $4.000.00 When Eyes Ale Snffng anally Up To Seinethin, Helping out The Auburn and District Lions donated $4,000 to the dialysis unit in Goderich on Sunday to help cover expenses for the medically necessary service. It is a book and a movement about the love of Jesus in action. The book also has a DVD study component you can purchase and I thought this would be a great study for the people in Auburn who are saying they want to live more effectively as a Christian. Bob Goff isn't a pastor. He is a lawyer who owns and runs a very successful law firm. Bob loves to put his faith into action so also founded an organization called Restore International. Bob began Restore International after a trip he took to India, where he witnessed extreme human rights violations. Restore India started with efforts to free those in bonded labor, sex trafficking or otherwise exploited. In 2006, Restore began working in Uganda in human rights and education. They continue to work in both India and Uganda with a variety of programs along with the following countries: Somalia, Nepal and Iraq. Because of his productive work with Restore in Uganda, the country asked Bob to be their Honorary Consul for the Republic of Uganda to the United States. So Bob is also a diplomat. However, there is more to his story. Bob is also a professor at Pepperdine Law School where he teaches non- profit law, and at Point Loma Nazarene University, where he teaches business law. Now, in my bold naivete I thought, wouldn't it be great if we brought Bob to Auburn in person to speak and inspire us here? So back in January I enquired. I tried... but the professor, lawyer, diplomat, advocate and author was booked right through to next year. However, I didn't give up and I kept checking in to see if he could somehow come. Finally on Feb. 10 it was looked rather bleak for any possibility of him coming to Auburn for I said, "Thank you, and perhaps we could do something in 2017." Then one week later on Feb. 17 they contacted me and said, "Would, May 21-22 of this year work for you" I said, "YES...we will make it work" As I am writing this Bob Goff is in Amman, Jordan and when he leaves Auburn he will be going to Disneyland in California to lead a conference. But in between now and then, Bob will be in Auburn. So I am thrilled... giddy really, to have Bob Goff coming here on May 21-22. If you would like to know more about Bob visit his website at bobgoff.com One of the highlights this week, and there were many, was welcoming eight new members into Huron Chapel. These are people who have shown a commitment to the church and who have used their gifts and abilities in God's work. We are more effective as a church with them on our team. We celebrated as a church family following the service with a pulled pork lunch and with cake made in the new members' honour.
