For some people, a bonspiel is a chance to get out and enjoy some curling. For others, it's a little bit more. (Denny Scott photo) The Brussels Curling Club finished the third draw of the season last Monday evening. Winners were: first, Steve Steiss and team members Mary Ann Thompson and Brent Alexander, 54; second, Mike Alexander with Mary Bernard and Dona Knight, 47.5; third, Murray Hoover with Ken Penfound, Norm Dobson and Doug Bremner, 36; fourth, tied, Gary Pipe, Jennie Schimanski, Karen Uhler and Don Baan and team George Zwep, Martin Thomet and Sandra Cable, 34 points; sixth, Jack Pipe with Jeff Cardiff, Debbie Coultes and Danica Zwep, 30; seventh, Jo -Ann McDonald, Brian Warwick, Cody Sanders and Sarah Alexander, 28; eighth, Steve Knight with Reg Vinnicombe, Bob Alexander and Monique Baan, 25; ninth, Carman Bernard with Don Chesher and Matthew Cardiff, 24; and 10th, Darrell Uhler, Katherine Thomet and Jeff Sanders, 17. The end of the draw was celebrated with lots of snacks and a social time after the game. It was also annual meeting time and President Mary Ann Thompson called the meeting to order. Minutes of last year's meeting were read and the financial information presented. Next year's President Jeff Cardiff thanked MaryAnn for a job well done and a second vice-president was then elected, with Gary Pipe accepting the position. We have a great group of curlers and can always use a few more. If you are looking for something to do on Monday evenings next year, think curling! Some teams finish finals, others look to provincials Celebrating After surviving a double penalty -kill in overtime, the Atom Local League (LL) Black Crusaders bested Mitchell in Blyth on March 10. The team managed a 4-3 win at the end of the game and had a lot of celebrating to do. (Denny Scott photo) Local hockey playoffs continue and, with March Break approaching, those teams still competing for post - season glory are getting a break before schedules are finalized and the playoffs continue. The Girls Atom C club dropped their one game of the past week to the Mount Brydges Cougars at the Seaforth and District Community Centre 2-1. The team next faces off in their Western Ontario Girls Hockey League (WOGHL) round robin against Mooretown and Wallaceburg, both on March 19. The Girls Bantam C squad put points in all three columns over the past week, beating out the Zorra Fusion on March 6 by a score of 3-0, tying the Mitchell Meteors on March 7 by a score of 2-2 and losing 2-1 to the Lambeth Lancers on home ice on March 8. The Girls Midget C club fell to the Bayden Ayr Dorchester (BAD) Blazers 3-2 at the Hensall District Community Centre. The squad next faces the Kent County Fillies in Blyth on March 20. The Girls Midget House League (HL) team faced off against Ridgetown and were handed an 8-0 loss. The team faced off against the Zurich Thunder in Hensall on March 16 however a score was unavailable at press time. The Novice Rep Crusaders finished out their last scheduled games against the Seaforth Stars on March 8 and the Mount Forest Rams on March 9, earning two wins in the process. The team will next see action in a tournament in Elmvale starting Friday, March 25 with a game at 11 a.m. against the Niagara Falls Flyers. The Novice Local League squad had a close game for their final scheduled match against the Ripley Wolves in Ripley, coming out with a 3-2 win. The Atom Local League Black squad finished off its final two scheduled matches of the year, losing to the Bayfield, Clinton, Hensall (BCH) Ice Dogs 2-1 on March 8 and then beating the Mitchell Meteors 4-3 in overtime on March 10 at home. The PeeWee Local League team earned a win and a tie in their two final scheduled playoff matches of the season, beating the BCH Ice Dogs 5-4 in Clinton on March 7 and then playing to a 1-1 draw against Ripley on March 9. The team plays in Young Canada Week this weekend in Goderich. The Bantam Local League squad posted a 5-2 Toss against the Lucknow Sepoys on March 9. The Midget Local League Crusaders faced off against the BCH Ice Dogs on March 9 and were beaten 7-2 but bounced back to beat the Howick Hornets on March 11 by a score of 6-1.
