Grey 4-H holds final Chocolate Lovers meeting

The last gathering and
achievement program of the Grey
Township Chocolate Lovers 4-H
Club was held in Seaforth on March
9 at Scott Saunders' Rollin' Roaster
in Seaforth.
The meeting was opened by
President Amanda Morrison leading
in the 4-H pledge. Fourteen
members, two leaders and a few
parents were welcomed to the store
by owner Scott and employee Lisa
Stevenson. Scott opened his catering
store last fall on Main Street in
Seaforth, but had been working out
of Mitchell before that.
Scott told members how he didn't
set out to become a caterer after high
school. He was actually a licensed
car and diesel mechanic when he
decided to build a roaster to use for
family gatherings and for friends.
Then he was asked to bring the
roaster to other events and before he
knew it he was asked to look after
the entire meal and demand just
never stopped after that.
Scott and his staff are now kept
very busy catering to all types of
events. The weekends in the summer
are especially busy with numerous
weddings and other celebrations
taking place each weekend, extra
staff is hired for these busy times.
Scott is known around Seaforth for
his Friday night specials, fresh hot
homemade meals, complete with
dessert, that can be ordered to take
home. They sell between 80-100
meals like this every Friday.
Scott put members right to work
after that by dividing them up into

We have enjoyed some wonderful
weather again this past week and it
got me thinking of the signs of
spring. It is quite a list, but it begins
with the arrival of lots of sunshine,
the sweet song of singing birds, sap
running to become syrup, snowdrops
blooming, snow melting, sweaters
not coats, sprouts of new life in the
gardens, streams running high,
scooters on the streets, school
holidays, shorts, socks and sandals,
swans in flocks, sets of Canada
geese looking to nest, sweeping off
the sidewalks and lawns, squashy
mud and skunks. It seems the signs
of spring all start with "S".
There was a beautiful flock of
Tundra swans in a pond of water on
Cranbrook road on Friday morning.
Sunday evening a flock landed in the
back field of our son's farm.
Beautiful birds to see.
Last week, I was mistaken in
identifying the mother of a child
recently born in Walton. The new
parents of the baby girl are Josh
Machan and Lisa Goll. They named
their daughter Morgan and she is a
beautiful baby.
I'd like to take this opportunity to
offer my deepest and most sincere
apologies. I truly regret my mistake
and am so very sorry for any
embarrassment or concern I've
caused as the result of my error.
You may have seen a familiar face
around Brussels on the weekend in
the person of Joanne Knight Black.
She is here for a short visit from
New Brunswick. She is catching up
with a visit with dad, Jack Knight
and the rest of the family and some
friends. She arrived on Friday and
she was put to work on Saturday
curling at the Brussels Curling Club
Bonspiel. She curled with brother
Steve, brother Brad and Christine
curled on another team, sister-in-law
Marni was the scorekeeper and Jack
came to watch. Sunday, members of
the family gathered for a birthday
brunch for her and sister-in-law
Christine at the Arden Park Hotel in
Stratford. Monday was set aside for
a gathering with the girlfriends and
Tuesday was to be spent with dad.
She returned home on Wednesday
after the whirlwind visit.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had 19
darters out to shoot last week on a
very mild night. The ever -invincible
Team 5 took all six games with
Murray Houston, Rita Bowers and
Evelyn Blake. A few high scores but
Annette Lewington topped with 98
for the ladies and George Zwep hit
134. The lucky shot winner was
Frank Workman.
The Walton Women's Institute
invited the Majestic Women's
Institute of Brussels to an afternoon
in the sugar bush at the farm of Steve
and Valerie Bachert on Moncrieff
Road. Valerie welcomed them to a
cozy product room. Sixteen ate a
pancake lunch complete with
Bachert syrup and sausages prepared
by Valerie. Steve gave them a brief
history of their third generation farm
and introduced them to their most
recent venture in the syrup
production. They were invited to
take a hay ride to the sugar bush and
walk the bush tour. It was a beautiful
balmy day which caused some wet
spots but 10 ladies went on the tour.
Both line and bucket systems were
set up for collection of sap.
A Native display showed the hot
stone boiling method of that time.
Game information and tree
information was found along the
trail. In the evaporator space, Steve

three groups. Each group then
completed three creations out of
chocolate. Members washed
strawberries then melted chocolate
with a tiny sliver of parafin wax and
then dipped the fruit into the
chocolate. Each group also made a
delicious batch of chocolate
haystacks. The third item was a
chocolate parfait, members made
chocolate pudding and then layered
the pudding, mini Reese's Peanut
Butter Cups, whipped cream and
chocolate wafer crumbs.
It was a busy meeting, but the
rewards were delicious! Members
ate their fill of chocolate -covered
strawberries and Haystacks and were

In last week's Walton news there

President Amanda Morrison
thanked Scott for his time and
energy in planning the meeting and
providing all of the supplies. She
then presented him with a small gift
from the 4-H members.
