Missionaries part as s eak of event in Auburn p This past weekend, Huron Chapel in Auburn held a mission's conference which featured many of the missionaries they support. It was great fun and also very interesting to hear from our missionaries first hand about their work. Tim Whatley, the executive director of New Tribes Mission of Canada, was a feature speaker of the conference. One story he shared was when he and another missionary landed a helicopter in an area where a tribal people lived who had never seen a white man before. When they landed they could see these tribesmen with their bows and arrows looking at them from the edge of the jungle. Tim shared he was very much afraid because there was a good possibility that these were cannibals who were sizing them up their dinner later that evening. However, the men came out of the bush, laid down their weapons and greeted them. I can't imagine what it would be like to be the first white person someone had ever seen let alone and be concerned about being eaten by them. Besides the Whatley family, other missionaries at the conference, supported by Huron Chapel, were the Talbot family, who minister among the Ga'dang people in the Philippines, the Elliots, who have a long history of working in Mexico and South America, and the Rodges, who are long-time members of and who now in Papua New Huron Chapel work full-time Guinea. The conference was organized by the Huron Chapel Mission's Committee. I don't remember laughing so much at a mission's conference before. They did a tremendous job making it very fun and informative. They also made sure the many children present were kept engaged in the learning and activities throughout the weekend. Helping out the world Andrew, left, and Julie Garland of the Huron Chapel Mission's Committee spoke during the mission's conference at the Auburn area church on Friday night. The event featured tales from missionaries from the New Tribes Mission of Canada. (Mark Royatt photo) OPP warn of multiple tax scams Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind residents that scammers have been very active throughout the region using a scam known as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) tax scam. This particular scam tends to peak around tax season and now that many of us are in the midst of filing our tax returns we are expecting a rise in this particular scam. This week Huron County OPP has received several calls from residents reporting fraudsters have been trying to impersonate Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) employees in an effort to pull off the scam. Generally there are two common variations to the scam. The first is when the scammer will inform you by e-mail or phone that you are entitled to a tax refund or benefit payment. In order to receive the payment you must provide personal information such as your social insurance number, credit card number, bank account number or passport number. The second is when the scanner will call you or send you an e-mail message informing you that you owe back taxes as a result of an audit. The scammer will often use threatening or coercive language to scare you into paying a fictitious debt to the CRA. Threats made by the scammers indicating that you will be arrested, deported or a lien placed on your home or vehicle are commonly used. Protect yourself and be aware of this scam. Here are some tips to avoid becoming the next victim: • Do not take immediate action. Verify that what you are being told is the truth. • Ask yourself why the CRA would be asking for personal information over the phone or e- mail that they likely already have on file for you as a taxpayer. • Contact the CRA to confirm that you owe back taxes or are entitled to a refund, before providing personal or banking information. • Be careful of fake CRA websites where the taxpayer is asked to provide personal information. • Remember the CRA will not request payments by prepaid credit cards. • More information about fraud scams involving the CRA. If you are someone you know has been a victim of fraud, contact your local police service or the Canadian Anti -Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 Sharing the experience Dawn, left, and Tiffany Uyl shared their experiences from a mission trip to Haiti with the Living Water Christian Fellowship Sunday morning..
