THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2016. PAGE 19. Entertainment & Leisure The early bird... As the saying goes, the early bird gets the worm and that was the case on Family Day Monday, as the Blyth BIA held its annual holiday breakfast and ran out of food, bringing out a much bigger crowd than last year. Part II Bistro's Peter Gusso, left, was out early that morning to help ready the volunteers, like Gary Clark of the Blyth United Church, for the day's meal service, which fed well over 100 people. They are in the process of looking for value-added opportunities on local farms and aiming to sell more food in Ontario. Lass agreed with several councillors who said that while buying local and supporting Ontario agriculture is a good concept, various levels of government are making it harder to make it a reality through various regulations and the closure of local abattoirs. The two ideas seem to be at odds with one another, she said, when they shouldn't be and change is necessary. She said it's important that activities and initiatives dictated by the "train the trainer" sessions continue so they capitalize on the momentum achieved last fall. "We're soon going to be offering sessions in Huron County, because we don't want to lose that momentum that we had in the fall," Lass said. "It's important that your ratepayers see something happening." Another area of focus, Lass told council, would be to work with the numerous Business Improvement Area (BIA) organizations throughout the county. Their role needs to be defined, she said, and they need to find their place in the new economic development structure. This is an issue, she said, that is not unique to Huron County, but it is happening all over southwestern Ontario. She hopes to meet with representatives from the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA) and to begin the process from there. Next, the focus will be funding, whether it be the next Rural Economic Development (RED) intake or Grants Ontario, there are a number of applications being written to help assist in the process in the coming months and years. Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn said that the initiative being taken with local BIAs is a good focal point. In Clinton and Central Huron, he said, the main issue seems to be a lack of manpower. With all BIA members actively owning businesses in the community, they simply don't have the time to commit extra hours to BIA initiatives and meetings, which can make taking strides forward with the BIA difficult.
