Big winners
The Midget 'C' Girls Crusaders took gold at the 2016 Caitlyn Cobean Memorial Silver Stick

Students to ski, play volleyball
By Principal Cathy Goetz
Happy February everyone! We
hope everyone enjoyed their Family
Day. Hullett Central Public School
has been a very busy place in recent
weeks. We had our school tubing
trip the end of January at St. Marys
River Run tubing.
In the words of one very excited
Grade 1 student, "The hill was
huge!"
The Blyth and Londesborough
Lions Clubs visited us this week to
share the good news that they are
sponsoring the primary classrooms
with purchasing some books for the
their classroom libraries. Thank you
to our Lion friends for their
continued support and involvement.
Our public speaking competition
is going to be held Feb. 23. Please
come and join us that mornning
starting at 9 a.m. with the junior
student competition.
Thank you to our sponsors at the
Royal Canadian Legion who
promote and sponsor this
competition. The first place winners
in each division will have an
opportunity to compete at the district
level early in March in Kincardine.
Senior volleyball teams have been
practicing under the coaching of Mr.
Caldwell and Mrs. Gilroy. The
students were scheduled to be at
their tournament Feb. 16 in Clinton
at Central Huron Secondary School.
Good luck teams.
Huron East decides
grant allocations
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron East spent much of its
annual grant budget earlier this
month, voting yay or nay on
requests that had come through over
the course of 2015.
At Huron East Council's Feb. 2
meeting, councillors went down the
list of requests and historical grants,
attempting to keep within its annual
grant budget of $20,000.
Grants approved at the meeting
were: $1,000, Brussels Agricultural
Society; $550, Brussels
Horticultural Society; $500,
Brussels Santa Claus parade; $500,
Ethel Minor Ball; $250, Huron
County Farm and Home Safety
Association; $250, Huron Perth
Agriculture and Water Festival;
$250, Huron Plowmen's
Association; $7,500, Seaforth Lions
Club (pool); $1,000, Clinton Lions
Club; $400, Maitland Bank
Cemetery; $1,000, Seaforth
Agricultural Society; $550, Seaforth
Horticultural Society; $2,000,
Seaforth Santa Claus parade; $500,
St. Columban Soccer; $1,000, Van
Egmond Foundation; $500, Walton
Area Sports Club and $500,
Winthrop Ball Park.
Council also approved several
grants that could not yet have a
dollar figure attached. Council
approved the purchase of wreaths
for the municipality's three
Remembrance Day ceremonies as
well as the money for a hall rental
for the Seaforth Food Bank for its
annual Souper Saturday fundraiser.
Two requests have yet to be dealt
with. The first is from the Building
Bridges to our Future campaign,
which is attempting to finance
improvements to playgrounds and
sports fields at both F.E. Madill

On Feb. 25 some students in
Grades 4 to 8 are going to be
travelling to Hockley Valley Ski
Resort. The recent cold temperatures
and snow squalls have resulted in
great conditions for us to have a
successful trip. We will just hope
temperatures are "just a bit" warmer
and that there are no squalls on that
day.
Report cards are headed home
this week as well in all grades. End -
of -term assessments are a good
place for everyone to reflect
on where they have been and to re-
set the compass to the track they
need to get on to reach their end
goal.
Thanks to the student council and
classroom teachers for organizing a
fun Valentine's Day for us. This year
students enjoyed a school dance and
also had the opportunity to purchase
a carnation for a friend. Twin Day is
planned for Feb. 29.
That is all for now Hullett Central,
have a great month.
The weekend of Feb. 6 was a busy
one for the Blyth Brussels Crusaders
Midgets C Girls at the 2016 Caitlyn
Cobean Memorial Silver Stick
Tournament, hosted by
Saugeen Shores, where they
took gold.
The tournament began Feb. 5 in
the afternoon with a match against
the St. Thomas Panthers. Neither
team scored during that game
leaving it a 0-0 tie.
The team's tournament opener
was followed by a 3-1 win Friday
evening versus the TCDMHA
Rebels and a third game Saturday
night against the Grey Highland
Shooting Stars where the girls
finished with a 1-1 tie earning a spot
in the semi-final game. Sunday
morning they faced off against the
Lambton Shores Predators, coming
out ahead with a 3-2 win.
The Crusaders finished the
weekend Sunday afternoon
challenging the St. Thomas Panthers
for the title and their continued hard
work proved a success as they came
out ahead ending the game with a 1-
0 win and taking gold.
BB2F gala set to
benefit Madill fields
The Building Bridges to Our
Future (BB2F) campaign is hosting
a special gala dinner and auction in
late April as part of its fundraising
efforts.
The campaign, which aims to
install new playground equipment at
Maitland River Elementary School,
enhance the environmental grounds
between the public school and F. E.
Madill Secondary School and
improve the sports fields at Madill,
will be hosting "An Evening of
Connections" gala dinner and
auction on April 30 at the Knights of
Columbus Hall at the North Huron
Wescast Community Centre.
The evening, which starts with
cocktails at 5 p.m., will feature three
speakers who have had their lives
changed by debilitating injuries. The
speakers are Julie Sawchuk, a
Madill science teacher who was
paralyzed from the chest down when
she was struck by a motorist while
cycling; David Greig, a former
Madill athlete and paralympic track
and field coach and David Willsie, a
paralympic gold medal rugby
champion who became a
quadriplegic after a hockey injury.
The masters of ceremony for the
evening are Julie `B' Bullivant from
CKNX's The One radio station and
Scott Miller of CTV. The auctioneer
for the live auction will be Huron -
Bruce MP Ben Lobb.
All the proceeds from the evening
will go towards the improvement of
the Madill sports fields.
Blyth restaurateur Peter Gusso,
also a former Madill student, will be
preparing dinner and hors
d'oeuvres.
Current Madill students will be
helping out for the evening.
Tickets for the evening cost $85
for individuals, $150 for couples or
an entire table for $600 and will
soon be available through the
Building Bridges Facebook and
Twitter accounts and through
BB2F.com. The website will also
feature information on the items
being auctioned off.
