Former Duff's United Church site in Walton sold
Huron East Council has approved
the rezoning of a property in the
municipality's Grey Ward, known
formerly as Duff's United Church
and its manse.
The application discussed at
council's Jan. 12 meeting with
several former members of the
congregation, including Graeme
Craig, Neil McGavin and Pastor
Sandra Cable, in attendance.
Huron County Planner Claire
Dodds outlined the changes, which
would alter the facility's zoning
from community facility to
residential, low density — special
provision.
Dodds' report says, "the primary
use of the property will now be
residential" and the change will also
permit the former church to be used
for a home occupation.
In her report, Dodds listed a
handful of home occupations that
may be undertaken on the property,
including a music and art studio
(which may include teaching
lessons, recording and repairing
instruments and the display of art), a
performance venue to be used on an
intermittent basis and a catering
kitchen where food can be prepared
to be served off-site.
There are also provisions in the
rezoning, Dodds said, that will allow
one of the purchasers, who is a
doctor, to practise medicine in the
home on occasion.

PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON

Winter is certainly here and the
snowmobile enthusiasts are making
good use of the trails. It seemed like
hundreds of sleds have passed by our
place starting on Thursday evening.
By Friday, continuous groups of six
and 10 sleds were going by and I bet
they were having a blast. The
Brussels -Walton Trailblazers met on
Wednesday evening at the Walton
Hall to discuss the business of the
trails. The groomers are being kept
busy with all the snow and everyone
is looking forward to weeks of
sledding.
Brussels and all the snow made the
news across the world last week for
another reason. It was a vehicle
covered in snow that had only a
small opening to see through. The
police charged the driver for the very
unsafe operation of the vehicle. The
news travelled the world with the
incident being reported throughout
Canada, the United States and even
in Britain. Who would have
imagined that an incident in Brussels
was made famous- or at least
newsworthy — thanks to this
incident.
We hope that Graham Work is
feeling better soon and that he is
released from hospital and home
again to the Highland apartments.
We understand that Harvey
Kitchen is in hospital at this time and
we hope he is recovering well.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had a
few more players turning out for the
night's play on Wednesday evening
at the Cranbrook Hall. It was almost
a full house with 20 players.
Winners were: high lady, Jane Zwep,
98; high man, Rob VanderVeen, 104.
Team 7 was the big winner of the
night, again, winning all six games.
Brad Speiran and Pat Gillis must be
practising all the time! The lucky
shot of the night was Evelyn Blake.
The Walton Hall was busy this
week with McGavin Farm
Equipment holding meetings on two
nights. Their employees attended
their first aid courses on the two
nights. They met after work, had
dinner and then class. I'm assuming
everyone will have passed.
Returning from a trip to the
warmer weather were Jim and Linda
McDonald and Jim and Danica
McNichol. They spent a week in the
Riviera Maya and had a great time. It
was a celebration for Jim and
Danica, as they observed their 25th
wedding anniversary.
Celebrating birthdays last week
were Nadine Ringgenberg, Connie
Alcock, Valerie Bachert, Laurilei
Shortreed, Henry Grobbink, David
Griffith, Kendal Carnochan
Schlosser, Kaitlin Ritchie, Leona
Armstrong, Brandon McGavin,
Helen Williamson, Scott Bromley
and Brenda McIntosh. Happy
birthday to all!
conditional upon the rezoning and is
therefore not yet final, the names of
the purchasers were not made public
as part of Dodds' report.
"A professional office/consulting
room is also permitted to be
established as a home occupation
within the residence," the report
states.
Dodds said that it's possible for
more than one home occupation to
be situated at the location.
In her presentation to council,
Dodds said the new uses will fit into
the community nicely. There is
plenty of parking that had previously
been used by the church's
congregation and there were often
musical performances at the church.
Council approved the rezoning
application. There is now a 60 -day
period during which appeals can be
filed.

Date set for Grey

Huron East Councillor and Grey

Placing the wrong items in the

Placing the wrong items in the recycling bins
increases the cost of the program and it lowers
the value of the remaining recyclables.
Just because something is made of paper, metal,
plastic, or glass does not mean it is recyclable.
Some items may be technically recyclable but
not acceptable in the current recycling program.
Make sure you see it listed in the acceptable list
posted on our web site, your calendar, or
