.That was quite a shaker recently
when a horde of CBC people, big
and little, . 'resigned in a fine
frenzy .of, foot -stamping; It was
as _interesting as it was refresh-
ing: Rather like seeing Little Eva
putting the. boots to Simon Le -
gree..
*-* *;
Personalty, 'I thinkit was, the.
best thing that has ever happen-
ed to the CBC.' The resulting..fur
ore should mean . a ..thorough
house-cleaning, long overdue.
Now, "don't think'' I'm :going to
launch into•an attack on .the CBC.
There is already one weeckly, col
'umnist Who makes a hobby. 'of
this. And a well-paid hobby I'll
bet it is, as his column is offered
free, and you ' don't get free col?,
un ns these days unless somebody
is grinding an axefor somebody'
in , them.

There is no doubt that the CBC
has gathered to its Freudian
breast. a number of the brightest
and most creative minds in, the,
country. Among them werethose
producers who. led .,the. Walkout•
the other day. One must, admire
their .gumption. In: any ` age, any,
situation, many will risk their
lives„ for. their ideals..Few will
risk their livelihood.
On the other hand, it is, equal-
ly apparent that the CBC ,nur-
tures ' a goodly brood of .. idiot
children . along with the.. bright
ones: These'e' may' be found any
where in ' the ' corporation, from.
the board . of directors .:down• to • .
the girls at .the switchboard. All
large public -supported bodies are
equally, inflicted:

When Mr. < Davidson .Dunton
was the mother of tlus unwieldy.,.
precocious --and• sometimes eri
harassing family, .everything ran,
if ' not like clockwork, at. '. least
as ..smoothly as : a Maw Kettle
movie. He encouraged : the bright
ones, covered up for : the, back-
ward ones, and 'managed to keep
neat on the table , by presenting
a sturdy . front and readytongue
whenever his ' employer -landlord
called for a reckoning.
Hissuccessors hate not ben
as able,` apparently, because 'the
bright. children /are staging a
tantrum, and ' the slow : ones are
drooling' badly. The result is a
delightful fracas, the second in,
a row that has • been staged in.
the middle •of. the Q.ueen's :visit
by those weirdies who populate
our home-grown broadcasting
and television monster.

There would be an upswing in
the national health as people
stopped •watelung' . those crudely.
late movies and got some sleep.
Ewenthe teenagers might be so
sickened of rock-and-roll and
cowboy 'music" they'd be ready
for something intelligent..

But let ,me make ' one thing
'clear. If the, C'BC board of direc-
tors decides to accept my sugges-
tion, and , shut up shop for the
summer; l' want them to 'eget'
their noses 'to the wheel and 'be'.
ready to • swinge back into full
operation in September.
The CSC can, and does, make
a bollixof a lot of things; but.
this would be : a 'sorry country • if
the corporation folded ' and our
national entertainment and edu-
cational programmes emanated
If • the claims • of ' the • igning
producers are. true t there
has : been. politica pressure.
brought to bear on c ,fain sen-
sitive
portions of the • monster's
anatomy let us have the facts`
and have • them smartly. If they
are not . true;` and the producers
'are merely being temperamental,
their resignations should be ac-
cepted and the whole joint clos-
.ed downfor the summer.,
the CBC would be' good ' for
A couple of months without,
everybody, It. would be better.
than medicine for the .TV addicts.
Some of them; .tn.ight even kick
thehabit.. 1t would reveal the
poverty of the private stations, if
they had' no CBC programmes to.
flavour the slop they .give. It
would give the culture vultures
of the CBC a -chance to cool
down, and realize that, outside
the. palisades, they are no longer
-unappreciated genius, but merely
people • out of a job, with the.
bulls pilling up.
• s *
That's probably the best solut-
ion: a CBC -less sununer. By the
end of August, even 'the ;politic-'
Ling might be iniss ng the good
old Jarvis St.
jezebel: The en- ..
arced holiday would • save a few
millions in taxes: Families would
get to know each other again.,
from' those purveyors of pap, the,
private stations.
Over the years, the CBC has
given us a lot of claptrap. But.
it has also provided u s with a lot
.of stimulating, , intelligent . 'pro-
grammes and some first-rate en-
tertainment A good aproportion of
its stuff ' is superior . to ,Britsh or
U.S. •radio and television,. And
all this on a comparatively miser-
ly : budget.
So come back, boys and girls.
All is :forgiven. You give us a
pain in the arm at times, but we•
couldn't get along without you,
We won't let , those politicians'.
pushyou around. After all, they
work.. for us, too.

An old Fable tells the story'
of several boys idly throwing
stones at a group of frogs bra

of the frogs at last, "this '
may be fun for you but
it death for us." '

• Too often we do thoughtless things without consideration
for others—for example, spending our money solely for pleasure
without regard for our family's future. How much better it would
be to provide for that future through the medium
of Sun Life'of Canada's modern life insurance policies.,
