THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
The Canadian; Cancer Society campaign.
is now in full swing. The slogan is "Fight
Cancerwith a Checkup and a Cheque,"
and few slogans sum .up : anycause ' so neat -

Ouded In the Huron County Goderich area,
with an objective of $4,000. The .response

Funds raised in Huron are used in part to.
finance service work in the County, as/well
as general education and research programs
carried on across Canada. 'During 1958, the
Huron Unit spent $1,800 on some 45 can-
cer :patients. An ' additional.' $ 700 was 'used.,
to educate citizens in the symptoms of can -
,ser and the need for early diagnosis. Over
$10,000 was forwarded to ,provincial head-
quarters to be : used ; in research projects.
The national objectiveof the society. is
•
42, 75 0, 000,,which helps to finance, the :big
gest and most-, exciting medical ' crusade of
all = time -the crusade to end, the curse of
cancer through research. Cancer takes the
lives of 22,000 Canadians and : causes great
suffering and economic hardship, not only
among elderly persons but also among
`children and 'young; ";adults.
Chief purpose of this campaign is to help
speed . the day when a cure is 'found.
\ THE IMPORTANCE -OF LIBRARIES
This is Canadian Library Week, and an
occasion which has considerably mor. e
significance than some of the many "weeks
which ' :are proclaimed throughout the year:..
p
Locally the Lucknow Public Library is
none of its size. It rovides -a
second to p
bright, clean. modern . reading ` room, and
shelves. loaded With a fine selection 'of
'reading material. Books are kept up-to-
date and the : progressive policy of the ..
Board has promoted an increase in ' adult
reader interest. Oddly' enough this increas-
ed reader . patronageis not evident in the
case of children's books, of. which : there is
also :a wide selection for all ages.
The objective of the week . is to remind ..
Canadian people that : reading can help `
them to .. explore and to 'satisfy their .need
for ; a greater sense of purpose and meaning
in their lives; to urge them to use more
fully 'the libraries of , all kinds in which the
treasures ' of • the Y printed word await
-throughout.: the .land. But; there is a wider
aims: • to 'set • apart a -time when people can
'rededicate themselves to the • ideas and
ideals of a free. society. Since our is a
society based on the choices made by the.
many rather than "a few,:its greatest con-
cern must be development of every ,indivi-
dual : tohis. highest -rapacity. Its vitality, itsy
very existence, . depend • upon the extent to
which all the people have formed the habit
of finding out, of intelligently weighing al-
ternatives_ of .reading to be informed. Limi-'
ted horizons' are dangerous to a free people;
so,: as we have discovered, is the mindless
assumption of superiority and invulnerabili-
s ty.
A'n better -read, • better -informed' Canada,
has become necessity. essity. The printed:word,
the .•very bass of education, has assumed a
new importance. Only a lifetime of contnu-
ing self -education' through reading, after.
formal. education : is completed, • can, keep:.
Canadians ini watchful readiness ; to :'excer-
cise responsible 'citizenship; Only a wide
. variety of reading can keep us ' abreast of
what has been, 'andwhat is, and train the
imagination to.' forge ahead into what might
be , in . thefuture,

CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE
It is !just a year ago now .that the Beatty
Ladder Factory commenced renovating . the
newly acquired "furniture factory in 'Luck—
now. By coincidence it was just about a
year later that a letter appeared- in the
•
Teeswater News, which we reprinted in.
part last .week. It .was signed "Interested,"
and claimed that the Georgian Bay. Devel-
opment
Association was responsible for . .
bringing the industry ,to Lucknow This •
claimed aroused a• bit of storm : here, and
so . to keep the record straight and give 'ere-
dit',where credit' is due, some of the ;'facts
which have been previously \stated in . The
Sentinel would, bear repeating. Reeve Joynt
is the roan . who brought the industry here, and . he has no 'need to come to his own
defence. His efforts have 'more than once
being publicly recognized in .this. regard.
Mr. ° Joynt had an exclusive listing on the
idle Lucknow Industries Plant, Owned by •
Wm. Renaud of Kitchener. The Reeve .ob-
tained his lead on the` Beatty firm through
,a municipalconsultant. in Toronto, and
worked from there, It was coincidental that ,
the: G.B.D.A. • was also aware`' atthat time
hat this firm, was in the market for an indus-
trial property and were making known what
was available in their area.• .`
However, .:`Reeve Joynt Was "by . t ., ' on his own,and in the days .workingys anden'
• weeks that followed he ; concentrated much'
of his time in an •all out effort to finalize
• the transaction which he accomplished in
mid-January of 1958. Mr. Joyntwas the
man who negotiated the sale and at no
time was the G.B.D.A. in the picture. Mr.
Renaud never met with any officials of the
Association,. and the. sale of :the Plant was
unquestionably due to the `relentless''. ef-
forts of . Mr. Joynt •
The writer . was invery
close . touch with
negotiations as they progressed, prior to ,the,
point when the time ' was ripe to announce
the good news.' We are of the sincere opin-
ion that had- not Mr. Joyntsucceeded in
` negotiating: the sale,. at that time, ` that the
plant would . still.;. be idle. •
