HOGS ,AGAIN1 N,
THE I EADUN,ES:
(By J. Carl Hemingway)
i`' Hogs' have,'' hit the headlines.
• 4 again. Two interesting armour-
cements by the Federal,
Minister
Of Agricuiture recently are most
interesting.
First Mr. Harkness is reported
to have .announced that the Floor
price for hogswill continue for,
six xrionths at $25.00 in Ontario
and then be reduced 'to .$23.00..
I don't know how much the pro-
ducers -are concerned with this .
support price but the thing that
intrigues me is ..the fact that the
.114 producershave received six
months' notice of the ` price reclue,
.tion. . •A year' ago the support
parice on fowl:. disappeared . over. `•
night without' any .headlines and •
the - poultry. producerhad no
warning to get. ; ott from cinder., ,
' '.II have no objection to the Gov-,
ernments , warning in case of
hogs, • in /fact .f think it is only .
reasonable, that ;producers should •
receive ' som.e, warning but *1
really think that the hog ' pro .
ducers can thank the strength of
their organiztion'for, this con,,-
sideration. Also this. should' indi= `
cate to the poultl y producers
.the need for . an - equally strong•. '
Poultry Producers , •Qrganization. '
Second-. the Federal.. 1VlinOte., • .•
has been reported-' tohave an-
nounced , that the hog :price . will, ,
be supported on a deficiency ;
payment basis to the farmer on
: ly.• . That is the /,price: will ' find
fts own level on: the open mar-
ket and the , :..government , will.,
then' make up the difference be...
tween that price and' the'; support:
price... The important •'point is
that this will be paid only to''in-
dependent farmers ' and will 'mit•
Orbepaid to.'coippanies operating
on a' vertically integrated" basis:
This thas•:•.been heartily approved`
'by_ western farmers , where . verti=
cal integration 'is threatening to
take. over the.. hog industry just
as :it' has the broiler .industry in
Ontario: . .
• iSince we in • Obtario: are for
tunate in having .a .producer con
°trolled marketing method we are:,
not • so • greatly concerned . with ..
this integration problem: We •
should however realize that
greatly increased production in `
the : west could undermine our'
market especially if this western:
production were - to - come .,under•
. • the contrrol .of large corporations.
