• There's 'sornething missing in
my, life this pring. I've been feel -
ng restless and •unfulfilled late-
ly,' and di.dn't know what was.
the: matter., put I've • realiied
_what it is:. I'm lonely for my old
house. , ' • .
• Since we Moved here, last
September. ,we've. lived' in a
rented house, ,and while it' S a
good house, 'it hasn't the ' char-
acter. of the old place. There's
nothing 'falling down, • er heav, ing.
or torn up.. Everything .is as 'neat,
••tid3i and uninspiring as the ex-
terior.'ef a shoe -box. •• • .
;Other years; about this time

First, .I'd..'cheek • the. ruts,, in

Depending on 'what ,kind of win-

lawn, ,aid • mutter, :"If fell,*

Then I'd Mosey around :to: the:

The Old .Ladyused to4ive me

Then rd turn over a.few spade-

Satisfied •that my worms had:
• wintered well, I'd give the cedar• ,
hedge..a routine check. When we
first moved to the old house, •it
was about twelve feet: high., Ev-
ery' Spring, tried 'to. figure' out
a' way- of trirriming .it. And every
spring it was a foot higher. Then
the -maples and spruce started,
,growing up through. the cedar,
and it was .so, pretty, I just let it
go. It must ' be 20 'feet high by
• now.' "But; if. I, wanted to' thin
1, could get SOme good
timber out of there .
.Next part Of. my annual .
in-
spection waS„the cellar. I'd go'
'down there ready for anything.
And that's just, What I'd' find in
it—anything from a beaver 'pond
.to'pOtatoes right out ;of the cellar
'floer. Wed to..pick up, a •shovel,
move. some ashes from. here and
there; then •get absorbed in re-'
stuffing' the. broken, window with
a burlap .sack, and ,finally; head
upstairs, mumbling, "If a fellow
could, just get Somebody to'.take
those 'ashes out Of there . '.."
There were dozens of other
httle jobs to plan:—painting . the
.trim; putting up that section of
fence the: kids knocked, down
three Hallowe'ens' back; putting
new panes in the. storm Windows;
tearing . down the leaky 'drain• -
pipes. Each of them ,took care-
• ful, accurate" figuring on time
involved, and inoney for mater -
And you 'know, II miss all that:
'
There's , soinehifig . about that
good, Old 'spring tour. of inspec-
tion that.IS vifal and sat.ISfying.
It 'just Makes' you ,want to get
'right. at things, arid- Plan them.
After:, years Of planning, this
y.ear I feel like, a .gentleman
pier Withbut a farrn.:I never got
around to doing .any of thOSe
jobs .around the. old p%-iee.,,But
if I. say it Myself, there • was
