Letters To Editor
Cites Reasons For
"No" Vote Monday
Lucknow, •Ontario.

The Editor

Dear Sir:
• 1 have read, with a great deal
of •intereSt, the report of an'
interview that you had, with a
• Mr. :Willard Forsyth of Oyen
Sound,. relative to thebuilding
of, a smotel in our , village. It.
is interesting •fto note that the
condition for building said mo-,
tel., is "that the village" voters
approve a clinling4 lounge 'licence
,for alcoholic. liquors." •
As 1 see it, 'this village could
vote for such a licence then 'find
that, 13.0 motel was built or that•'
Mr. Forsyth had withdrawn
from the picture and some .other
interest taken over the project..
The • information that, one ga-
thers does' not show that., Mr.
Forsyth has given any guaran-
tee in writing or posted any
bond in the good faith of his,
intention to build. • • .
• .C)e also' wonders why. Mr.
Forsyth sold the motel , at
i Owen Sound when a • lounge
!licence vote is due , in a' year
and.. a half' in that city. Our in-
formation is. that :the present
operator of the Crystal Motel'
has 'no liquor lounge licence,
in fact des not desire one, & .
is doing such good. business ,
that • a traveller has to book the, .
needed ,aCtommodation four
,clays ahead.: A good motel does-
n't need 'a loimgh• licence 'In
order to make it pay. '
One hears the problem of in-
dustry , being I injected into the
discussion of the vote,. but the
fact' is that •industry is so seri-
ously .concerned over the prob-
2tem___Of__k_tolic absenteeism
that in many cases it is moving
from the, places that have out-
lets because Of the drinking
pattern affecting the „work , pat-
tern. It .will be no ',industrial
advantage • for us • tovote' our
village' intO the rank • of "the
*et places:" • . .. •
In conclusion, Mr. Editor -- If
we vete "yes" on these ballots
then weopen the door to ap-
plications . from other interested
parties and we, could have sev-
eral places applying for licence,
also banquet . permits could be
obtained and our village •be fac-
ed with •a . real drinking 'preb,
• . In the last analysis who pays
for 'the. vote?. The Business Meri
did notask for the vote, neither
'did the Lions or I' The Legion:.
