THE LUCKNOW SENTINEL, LUCKNOW, ONTARIO
'• There's. a new Movement, and
a fairly strong. one, afoot in
Quebec these days. • Its adherents,
labeled. "Separatists," are urging
that .La 'Belle:: Province secede
from the rest of Canada and
establigh a. separate Wrench nation
-on the shores of the St. Lawrence.
• ,I don't know the 'insand outs
of it, •but, personally, I think it's
a splendid idea. In fact, not Only
• do 1 wish them well, but 1 hope
the scheme becomes a trend that
will sweep North America. It's
the only thing that can •break
the vast; • neat blocks into
.:..Whieh. this ,Continent is, divided,
and give usa hodge-podge of
,untidy, interesting little states,
countries and principalities, such
•• as the other continents boast. ,.
As far" as I, Qcan see, brealthig.
• . Canada down from. 10 huge, in --
digestible chunks of .40 or .50
juicy,' indigestible morsels would
solve most of our problems in
• a twinkling.
• • First of all, it ml-ght-stop-cul7
•, • tured Europeans and disgruntled
,
'.homeibrews • from articles about
.the: good, gray ,Canadians, .those
unimaginative,. conservative, , .
col-
orless' people who • live some-
where north of ' Detroit, nursing
their inferiority :complex. I. get
• so sick of this slop I could cry.'
• They 'couldn't acuse is of these-
" 'negative • virtues , any more if we
Were suddenly tranSfermed, into
• a Seething ..masS of. republics;.
•. . people's democracies, monarchies
and what -not. You. see, .if this
was 'done, everything, would be
different. The overpowering dull-
ness of ,.Canadian lifewouldbe
replaced by, the romantic; exotic
existence of the other continents.'
We'd be able to enjoy such.
fascinating' things at: revolutions
and counterrevolutions;' refugees
fleeing across boarders; students
rioting :in the streets; military
juntas carrying. outcoups d'etat;
sidewalk' cafes ,riddled with spies;
'United Nations aid; abusing the
• Americans; and .all the other
finer things in life. .
Another thing, Canadians pro-
. :bably.. travel more miles per year
than. anyone else, 'yet most .of us

have never been outside the
country. What euld be more bor-
ing than to climb MI a train, ride
it for the best:Part of a .week,'
Clinib off, and still be in the
same country? That's, what hap-
pens now.
All this .' would be changed.
With. all our new countries ,and
borders, a , cross-country train
trip would become a thrilling'
adventure. We'd need passports
and visas. We'd have . to pass
border guards with tornmy *guns.
Our traveling companions would
be 'Mysterious Strangers—espion-
age agents; diplomats' 'mistresses,
wild-eyed anarchists—instead of
talkative elderly ladies . going to
visit . their daughters, young 419-
therg with da,mp, whiny children,
and exhausted ,middle-aged men
heading for hathe after the hard-
ware convention. • • ,
• • •
Unemployment would be salved
overnight. There'd be countless
neW----g0Xrnment 'cibt open in
customs; immigration, post office,
treasury, propaganda arid secret
police departments: Smuggling
would 'provide a refuge for the
few adventurous souls who re-
pudiated officialdom.
