Issue ;Report On
Pione Crash
Keith S. Hopkinson, operator of
Sky Harbour Air' Services, 'Goder-
ich, died March 26 in the crash of •
his ' twin -engined plane nearhis
home airport ' because of an inter-
ruption of the fuel supply to, both
engines
This was 'the'' "probable" cause
.of the crash, the Civil . Aviation
:branch: of the department of trans-
port reported yesterday • although.
it said a combination, of three
-other circumstances ` may have
teen a factor
4
Department investigators re-
ported that Hopkinson appeared
fatigued at the London Airport be-
fore his 'departure for Goderich,
that a • medical examination dis-
closed he was suffering from• a.
virus infection and that flying
conditions were "extremely tur-
bulent."
The ' plane crashed and burned
two miles southeast, 'of Goderkch.
The ' department's official, ' re-
poit of ' its inquiry noted that an
empl'oyee of Sky Harbour Air
Services had reported that ''Goder-
ich Weather at . the :.time of . the
crash was characterized by: snow
I. squalls which varied the visibility
and by .wind; gusts of 40 to 45
m.p.h. This had been confirmed
by the search .plane . pilot who had
reported "extreme turbulence" 'at
Mow' levels. • ,
Examination of the engines
showed that they . should have
been 'capable of normal operation:
1 The condition of the propellers
;indicated, however, that they were
not developing power atthe time
of the impact. .•
1 .. "The low level of fuel in the
`:tanks combinedtvith: the turbu-
lence that existed could have
caused interruptions in the fuel
flow due to, the fuel sloshing in
the tanks} The possibility of er-
roneous: fuel quantity indications
must also be considered," the re-
port said.
