Ssdenis. Debuted Question
Could ;Teenagers Vote?"
(by Jim MacDonald)
That was the ` question posed to his world and, the opposing view
a panel of six senior students at. was that students, of today are
.1
an .Assembly : held in the High
School ,auditorium on Thursday
' morning. >
The panel was composed of three
Grade XIII students: Sharon 0 -
'Donnell, Dan , Dalton and Keith
Kaiser and " three Grade XII stu-
dents: "Cookie" . Gibson, Donald
Hodgins and Jim Anderson. Jim.
MacDonald acted as. moderator.
The first question put to the
panel was: "Are teenagers of eigh
teen responsible enough to vote
or not?"
Immediately '.an argument ' en-
sued as to the difference between,
"responsible" and.."responsibility.",
It was ' generally` agreed that by
the time a teenager . has reached
the age of eighteen he. has as-
sumed many responsibilities which
adults of voting age would : think
burdensome.. It is ' logical there-
fore; to 'think' that . a teenager of
eighteen, assuming such respon-
sibilities, ` would be a • responsible
voter! . However, . no definite an- “should the voting age be lowered
swerwas given to this Problem. .• • • t ?" The results were:
too involved in their • studies to
keep ,up ' with national• and, world..
affairs.. It was . ' also pointed Out
that there. are many' teenagers who.
have left school . to earn . their
own way: What 'about them? How
well, are they : informed?
During the .'_course of the dis-
cussion many other interesting and
worthwhile questions came to light
but ' time did not permit a "lengthy
discussion , of . these,;
The ' panel . did 'not attempt to
form conclusions to the questions
asked, their -main purpose ° being
to express opinions and to inform
the student body viewing • the dis-
cussion
i -cussion of the many aspects of the.
question : of ` voting : -at the age; of
eighteen.
• To show the. interest aroused' in
the: student body, Mr. Hall was
persuaded . to allow a discussion
of:" the question by his Grade.XI.
class during one of the classes.
At 3:30. the'e student body.•was.
asked. to vote one the question:,
The next question was:"Would
they . be influenced by their ' par-
ents, •.political views or would they
form their own opinions?"
In reply to • this, one of the
panelists humourously pointed out
that • most teenagers are usually
in sharp disagreement. with their
parents in the majority of. cases.
However, it was pointed out that
parental influence is always great'.
in : these formative years.
"Do they . know 'enough about
national 'and world .affairs?"
The two main viewsstated here
were: mass news presentations to : True, great-grandmother didn't
• the general public and history ' have . all those labor-saving • de-.
lessons taught in the schools keep vices. But then : again, she didn't
the modern teenager well inform- (: have to go out and get a job
ed as to what is happening in ; in. order to pay for them.
