ment for an accompaniment for
the singers and mostly everyone
sang. • ,
There were readings and de.
bates. Readings were of high class
literature such asextracts from
"Dr. Tal-madges lectures, Mark
Twain; Cowper, Red Cross of .Eng-
land• and many others:
• These people had yearning
for greater knowledge and early ,
after organization they purchased
books and magazines for a 'lib-
rary. Those bedwere well, talr- ,
en care of and when a new lot
of books arrived the -contract for -
covering them was let by auction. ,
Jane Dawson, later Mrs. Edward •
Snowdon (who • died ;in 1946) took -
the contract Of covering the books,
supplying factory cotton -a n d •

thread for 25 cents a dozen.
, Picnics were held in % Blairs
Grove, with Ripley ,.Brass Band -
to help , with the entertainment.
They had "speakers also at the .
picnic: The Lodge voted $3.00 to
be expended on prizes but at the

this one. One at Lochalsh, one •

Pine River Temperance Lodge
was organized in the. year 1064,
March 2nd. •
They met in the school house
of SS No. 1 Huron. ,
The first Otecretary was Sam
Henry, a school' teacher .and fa-
ther of Ernest Henry of -the Book
and China Store in Kincardine,
The Worshipful Chief was John
Balantyne, who at that time. lived
on the farm just north of Pine
River Presbyterian church. 1VIr.
Balantyne was- for many S'ears
superintendent of the Presbyterian,
Sunday School and was always
an advocate of everything that
was •for -the good and welfare of
the community. ,
The meetings were carried out
in a business like manner and
if members missed a meeting,
they had to give excuses and
pay their dues later.
Fees for the ladies were three
cents per quarter and for the
men five cents. For non-payment
of fees "'members ' were suspend-
ed until payment was made, and
of course if Members were known
to break the pledge 'they were
expelled permanently.
Entertainment Consisted of sing -
Mrs. Frank Dore and. Ronnie' ,
Mr: and' Mrs. Robert White and
Mrs. William White spent Sunday
in London.
Sympathy is' extended Mr. Wil-
liam J. Arnold in the, pasing of
his sister Mrs. Thomas Colwell,
Ripley.
