Heart Research
An' interestingtest is currently'
being made at the • Wingharn and
District Hospital`, where Bell Tel-
ephone technicians ' installed spec-
ial'' equipment.
Purpose:; of the installation is to
do field testing' on telephone trans-
mission: a f • electrocardiographic
heart tracings. The basic . mach-
ine is still the • electrocardiograph,
a :device • which has, long' been ,used
to recordtheimpulses of the hu-
man heart on a : sheet of graph
paper. From these "tracings'* • an
expert. ' cardiologistcan detect
weaknesses and usually suggest
the ' form of treatment • to ' be
Up to the : present . the .. tracings..
,taken' from: heart patients at the
Wingham Hospital . have been sent
to ' Victoria Hospital, London,
where , Dr. G. W ' Manning, head
of the cardiology ,departments or
one of his• staff members, .read
the graph and returned the nec-
essary findings by mail. Normally
about three days wasrequired to..
obtain an answer.
The .methodnow:: being tested'.
would eliminate the time element
completely. ' Connected to the ^elec-
trocardiograph - machine is •a . de-
vice which is. -in turn, connected
to a long distance. .telephone line
to London.' The technician ':m the
Wingharn Hospital will first pick
-up. the 'attached telephone to alert
the . cardiology department at 'Vic-
toria. As ;soon :•as. theactual heart,
readings comity nce the impulses
will be receive on:'• •a companion
machine . in . the London hospital
and a . tracing on graph paper •will
be ' made there Simultaneously•
with the gone; in Wingham
The London, specialist:: will in
most cases be ,able ''to give his
findings .by telephone to. Wingham'
within a few minutes, thus elim
inating delay's' . which might, in
some *eases, endanger . lives.
The equipment in the Wingham
Hospital was installed on a 90
day` trial basis,• one of . theob-
jects being to determine 'operat-
ing costs' and so ,find: out whether
or not the service : is ,economic
ally feasible for other institutions. •,
Cost, of the installation was ' borne
jointly by Bell Telephone and ` the
Heart Foundation. Although the
transmission of heart : tracings has
been carried out previously in the
United' States, this is the first

Emmerton' of Huron Township'
and 'Roswell Smith' of Amabe
Township were : re-elected .as reev
es of their municipalities :and . will
no doubt be in the race, for the.

'For ' mitre than 40 years ` ` the
policy in . Bruce has .been . to al-
ternate
the wardenship between,
rural and urban • reeves. Harvey " ; '•
Palmateer of Kincardine is the
1963 warden.
• Amabel' last was represented
in the warden's chair in 1936 when
William
Ard • was elected, Huron
in: 1928, _when W. J. MacKay *as
the incumbent, and Carrick in 1938
when Henry. Lantz held the office.
Mr. Lantz moved across the bor-
'der' to Neustadt-where he contin-
ued in -
:municipal politics and in
1962 was warden of •Grey :County, ._
the . first man in Ontario to serve
as warden- in different, counties.
A check of wardens for the past
45 ' years shows all townships ex
cept' Kinloss : have held the hon

has . had ee wardens and.El
derslie, an; Culross and Lind

Allurban centres : have. been: .re-
presented in 'that time, although
two had. only, ,a half term each.
In. 1941Samuel, Ewart of. Chesley

fice. Another election placed John
Logie of 'Paisley as .,successor for
the: rest' Of' the term
Lucknow is• the 'only'• town to
have the wardenship three terms
m the. `past 45 years:, .Their' rep-
resentatives included a father. -son
combination, Wesley '','Joynt in
'1947, and. his son, George, in' 1959.

J. W..Joynt, and George Joynt's
uncle, the late . Robert 'Johnston, rt

'Of particular ..interest 'locally Is
the fact that Gordon Steward, a
former Lucknow. man and son of ; :,
Mrs. , Charles Steward . of . Luck
now and the late. Mr. Steward,
who is : a technician with the : car-
diology
ar diology •,unit 'in London, .. has been
