The September : meeting was
held ' Thursday afternoon Septem-
ber 23 at the home of Mrs. Reg
Broome. Mrs Bert Alton the vice
president opened the meeting
with prayer. Thedevotions from
Hebrews 12: 1-3 of • Jesus the au-
thor and .finisher.. of our' faith,
was,taken by Mrs. •Lorne Hackett.
Eight . members answered the roll
call with a verse containing. "Har-
vest." ~A ' set: of underclothing is
to be purchased' and . sent in the
supply work. A motion was passed
to pay our share of the cost of
the Observer which .. is sent to
each ;family. ' A substanial report
was given from the receipts,, at
the fair' booth. The ' groups for
the bazaar '' project are reminded
to get their projects finished. Mrs,,
Blake Alton gave a . reading ` The
Children's–Day and The Anvil of
God's • Word and the 'chapter "from:.

For Bobs Smith

write-up of the funeral of Bob
Westminister Presbyterian chur-
ch was filled to' overflowing Fri-
day at the funeral service , for
Robert, Smith of the Sault who
was . killed in• a . ear . accident at
Wingham, Ontario,. Sunday
• The late" Mr. Smith, 45, was a
piper . with the 49th Regiment's
Pipes.. and Drums for many, years.
He was also an initiator and in
structor of the Sault ' air cadets
pipe band:
About 50 nembers of local 'mil-
itary organizations attended the
funeral in ' full uniform. The mili-
tary was headed by Col. W. " A.
Maddox, commanding officer of
the 49th Regiment. Also in atten-
dance was Squadron Leader . Wil-
liam Guy of 155 Air Cadets.
Representatives from t h e air
cadet, pipe band, pipersand drum-
mers of the 49th Regiment, : and
other :military formed an honor
guard and saluted as Mr. Smith's
body was brought o u of. the
Pallbearers were ` 'members' of
the 49th Pipes and Drums.
A number ,of ::RCAF personnel
were to. fly . into . the Sault for the
funeral. However,.: they were ;'de-
layed ; :by bad weather.
Attending , f r o`m out of town
were representatives from Branch
429 of the Wawa .Royal Canadian
Legion, and : Lieut. ' G. Davalano,
a member of the:. Royal Canadian
Dragoons: '
The .military later formed , :up
at the 'graveside' to pay their ` last
respects. Pipe major, G. Duncan
moved' 100 yards away from the
grave and then advanced slowly,
playing a lament. He ' later play-
ed. "Wings" a quick march tune.
Each member of themilitary
in attendance moved' . up . to the
coffin, saluted and passed by.
Mr. Smith was the first mein-
ber of. local military to he buried
under the new flag. The flag us-
ed . •was �:• later ' presentedto the.
deceased man's son,. Bill, a mem–
ber of the 49th Pipe Band..
Mr. Smith died of 'chest .injur-
ies in a ;two -car, head-on collision
on Highway '86two miles west of
Wingham, Ontario. Four other
persons, died in the crash.
Mrs. Smith, who was with her
husband : on a • holiday ` trip, was
seriously injured in the accident
•but is now recovering. Others kill-
ed were Mrs. Smith's father, two
sisters and a brother, , all .of Luc-
knovr�, ; Ontario.
Funeral Director.' Len Barton
said the funeral was one of r the
largest ever . 'seen in ' this city.
