,'REPORT FROM, QUEEN'S PARK
by Murray:Gaunt,

The .agricultural estimates came
before the. House on Thursday.
I . pointed out that the 'basic pro-
blems facingOntario •farmers• is
the .lack of adequate income.. It
poutted ,out that the farmers
Income :.in relation to ' 'his costs
}has declined ; steadily _ until it is
30% lower . than it . had been
in 1949. In 'the. same period the
figure of bis fellow worker in in-
dustry risen no less .than 54%,
try
This spread of 84% represented
• a subsidization of the economy by
the farmer, the ' biggest' subsidy
In :Canadian' History,. I made the
point that the province of Quebec
does much more. to help out its
farmers than, does. ' Ontario, ; so
that Ontario :farmers are actually
at a .distinct disadvantage when
they try to compete ' with Que-
r
s also critical of the ' Gpv
eniment's "lackadaisical and :lais-
sez-faire attitude" in failing to. co-
operate • with:: Federal..' 'farmers',
aid programs, notably ., A.R D.A
This government : has, over the
years, adopted. • the policy that if
the fanners . yell and scream hard
enough, we'll throw them a crumb',
or two. Indeed, I sometimes won-
der' whenthis government has
any policy, at,all;
I stred .,he following 'recom-
mendations:. ,<
I. Forgive one third of . every
Junior. ; Farmer• :Loan to a max-
ittm of $3,000 if the:: borrower
has kept up within reason his -in-
terest : and;: , principal payments-
for ten years, „provided .. he's ,a
full -tune: farrier.
2. Reduce the : interest on Junior
Farmer. Loans' from 5 to 3%
3. Pay up to 2% of ' the interest
on Farm Improvement Leans with.
a • principal'' forgiveness after 5
years of 10% of the total amount
of the ':loanup to $500,'
4. Subsidize the cost of trans-
portation of . livestock to slaughter-
ing centrees • in, remote areas :that,
are far removed from markets
5. .The payment ,of a ;direct.
grant of '20% . of _ the; purchase
price of commercial fertilizers up.
to,: a 'maximum of .$75 per farmer
per year. ;
During this week 2 days were
taken up debating the new Med-
icare.,' Programme that was in-
troduced in the Legislature a
couple of weeks ago. The . debate
wasadjourned and will continue•
next week but of course this 'plan
will be voted into, effect. a
