It's GrowingEvery Day
• The Public:School 'QUestiOn in•LUCknoW at the present thrie
•is a confused one and,. school beard, members, as well as many
interested 'residents are concerned about :what the future 'will
hQld for elementaryeducation. in LucknoW. " . •
• . The picture is .briefly this ---.- Effective the first of this year,
the Department of Education introduced ;net'', legislation 'making ,
the Township School Area the . smallest unit- of administration
• over elementary education. Before the many new ,,,areas had .a
chanceto even get their feet wet, 'the Department had announc-
ed ' that:county' advisory committee's 'were conimenchlg ground-
work to forrnlarger areas, comprising several Municipalities,
This has been carried on 'during the winter Months.*
Lucknow's 'problem is this Advisory committees, were Set
Op. on a county basis with a few membersfrom county council'
working with • public school inspectens. They held various meet- •
ings throughout the counties and worked out what they thought
Would be suggested groupings of municipalities into larger areas.
• Lucknow , sits plunk on the boundary, line betweeen 'Huron. and
-,(Bruce Counties but for municipal purposes is regarded as a '
Bruce , problem, and as we,see it, it. is getting to be . mere of a
problem 'every day.•• • • . '
The Huroncommittee' hasfavoured an area • comprising Ash-
field and .West Wawanosh Township Some of the ratepayers they
are concerned with live right at the . outskirts of the village but • ,
no • discussion • has ever been held between the Huron Committee
and. the Lucknow School Board;because "Lucknow is in Bruce".'
• • •
---Likewise7the--Bruce-cpmnmttee_has done their job ,m Bruce, but
when they come to that boundary 'line, there apPears-to-be-an
other "Berlin Wall" with a large': "hands Off". sign.
•*. There has to be a division • of areas as served by a commit-
tee, we' are well aware of this, but. there should be some eo-ordin-
ator. who would ',deal with this matter and would •try to Make • •
Suggestions on. •these boundary Oases. . •
'•*. We know of attempt by public school inspectors in Huron
. and Bruce to assist Lucknow m her "border" problem. 'We feel
they should be. the leaders in a matter ofsuch importance but
as we have seen it to date, they are concerned only With their ,
own particular counties and this.; can . be 'said too • of :the :others .:
on .the advism conunittee. • . . *k• •
An earlier suggestion that Lucknow .and Kinloss might form
' an areais further away than ever now. Kinloss Board has. dern
tided to 'apply for permission tobuild a 4 -room 'addition to their
• present school and should this be granted, Lucknow would be sit- •
ting alone.
We are fiiitaltempting-to-suggesti-what---ii-best-for-the,rurati
areas. They know that better than we: But we will suggest that •
if there', had ,been no county division here, in all probability the
advisory .board would have suggested an area comprised of Wept
•
Wawanosh, Lucknow, Ashfield and .KinlosS. This would give a
.
pupil population • of slightly less, than, 1000; right, along the :thinking
-
of . the Department . of Education. 'Lucknow .is the centre for the'.
majority . of this community for High 'School Purposes; sporting .
•
activities, shopping,' medical and . dental service, fire. protection.
-and. many :other 'services • 'Yet for the purpose . of the public
school areas,. the .right hand doesn't even know : the left hand is
there
Lucknow Board invited .members of. the. public Schoolboards
from Ashfield, West Wawanosh and- Kinloss to an Informal.'meet-
ing in Lucknow last Saturday night. The. purpose of the meeting
Was • to give all sides an opportunity to express their views on
the matter: The feeling of • the Lucknow Board is' that an area
comprising the' four Municipalities would be to *advantage 'over
the present ,smaller areas that are being formed. • • . :
• But, in view of the 'Organizing that has beendone on:a' cram!
. ty basis, it. had -been left to_the..Lucknow board to • take this step:,
No initiative was ever shown by either the- Bruce or Huron sides
•to call such a Meeting. 'The, meeting 'did not 'change .plans:of the'
rural boardi,,,which is quite' understandable in view of the plan- •..,
mug that has already been done by them..
• •• The . absence of any Co-ordination between Huron and ,Bruce
ox Lucknow's 'boundary 'problem has' .left 'the Lucknow. board in.
"quite •A box". ' • •
