Dies At Train Station

The entire -community. was sad-'
dened, when word. was received
of the sudden. death of John Don,
ald. MacCharles, well known and
highly respected Huron Town-
ship' farmer. Mr. MacCharles,48
died from a heart • seizure .after.
wading through snow for about
a quarter of a mile . to the Ripley
train 'station early last Thursday
morning.
• As president of Ripley and Hur-
on Township :Agricultural Socie-
ty, John was one :of the dele
gates to the ' Fairs convention in
Teronto last week Because ' of
the storm conditions in the area,
he�and. Gordon Patterson of 'Hur-
on were~ planning to.' go, to' Toronto
by train.' ' • .
The CNR passenger train goes'
through Ripley.. about 6:00 a.m.'
andthe two men planned to flag
.the train. and catch their ride
Thursday morning. . .

He Walked from the Walden
home on .' the 8th concession at
the western outskirts of Ripley
to the . train ',station, a distance
estimated at • about .one-quarter . of
a mile. Blizzard conditions were
prevalent. at the time ' and : the
walking was, difficult in ;, places.
•His companion. on the trip, Gor-
don. Patterson,. was at the station
.ahead of John and the two men
talked for about five minutes be-
fore he suffered the seizure.' His
only complaint: to Gordon was
that it : had been, necessary for
him to stop a couple of: times
while, Walking . to the station.
Gordon .phoned Dr. J. B. Tin-
dall from the residence of Eva
Culbert nearby. He had met Eva
and Nancy • Elliott coming to the
station where Nancy, `18, was cat-
ching the train for Detroit Her
parents. recently 'bought the Cul-
bert :farm ' and she had spent the.
night in town; prior.: to .catching
the :'train. ' ..•
When the train arrived at the
station the • conductor forced the,
office .door to give the doctor
access to the phone and some
light. Mr..' McCharles passeda-
way shortly after. the ` doctor ar-
rived :at' the .scene:.
John was born. on the grid of
Huron ' on the . farm ` . now. owned,
by Herb'. Clayton ..on` October 5th,
1916. He . was the son of Donald
MacCharles and . Mary 'MacKen-
zie, both. natives. of . the . area.
They predeceased him. On March
21st, 1943, he married . Noreen
Walden of the 2nd of Huron
He was a valued member .of
Olivet United : Church and a mem-
berU ted C urch •

in 4-H work for a number of

afternoon for a posting to Regina
with •the Royal Canadian. Mount-
ed Police. He will serve his basic

In Storm Accident -
A. milk. truck -snow plow collis-
ion last •Friday . morning in front
of. Alfred Patterson's gate on

Highways vehicle. '
The truck was proceeding west,
to Lucknow where . it was to pick
up .a: load of buttermilk. The plow
was proceeding east on Highway.

ing, the ;milktruck • jack=knifed
and collided . with the plow dam-
aging it . from the front . fender.
back to the box. -In doing so, it
punched 'a hole in : the gas tank
and. gas, leaked' into the exhaust
of` the'.;plow.
• When. plow driver Carl Weber
shut off the key, of''the truck, it
backfired and the dripping gas
ignited and' a ,flash.•fire. resulted..

Township were. able to escape•
from the .burning vehicle ,through
the right door. The milk truck
was -driven. by Archie. McCartney
of Chatsworth.:
Lucknow Fire Department was
phoned from the farm of; Lorne
Wall and . made the run in bliz-
zard conditions. The truck was
beyond saving .when firemen ar-
rived.
The burned out vehicle was
"floated" • to . Stratford and an-
other sent to replace it that
night, What little traffic that was
on the read. inthe storm was
held up for a time following the

ada thirteen years ago' just short
ly after , they were married. , She

then.
Mrs. de Boerwill .visit '.with her
brother who visited here last sum-
mer; a sister; and . her mother,
Mrs. ' R. Lantinga who is .in a
nursing. hone. She hopes she will
he ableto be with her mother
when. she ,'r celebrates her 77th
birthday on March 5th. She will
also visit ' her' husband's ' only
brother living in ,Holland, now, Y.

Last Saturday Mrs. 'Wallace
Conn ' with ' snowshoes and carry-
ing 'an extra pair, accompanied
by her daughter ,Muriel on ski,
set off on •the snow blocked road
,to , the home of ; her sister Mrs.
Russel ' Ross. Mrs. Ross .donned
the snowshoes Mrs. Conn took
her and Miss Doris Ross donned
another pair,and the, foursome
set off across.the fields for• Joe
King's, carrying bridesmaid at-
tire for Doris who was • to be
bridesmaid at the Chittick-Arm-
strong • wedding in the United
Church, Wingham, that afternoon.
The • Culross snow ' plough had
come through early in the fore-
noo,nC to M
r•.King's gate.' Hence
Mi , King, with' his car, took the
ladies to Wingham in time for
the wedding. The Kinloss plough
did not get through till later in
the days '
