The marriage of Miss Vail and Van °s-
trand' was looked forward, to as one of
the great &Vents in Coludibus society. --.A short time 'before the wedding day,
however, a business associate •of Van
Ostrand'e discovered the existenee of ne-
gotiated notes tsi the amount et S(100,
to whicli the former's name was forged.
' The passing pf the notes was traced,back
directly to Van ()strand, and he -was
charged with the crime by his partner,-,
and subsequently arrestek-
denied the crime, and was supported by
• many friends -among them-tbe-fatler of

trial it was 'ascertained. that Iran °s-
trand was preparing to 'leave' the city,
which caused his bondsmen to deliver
him up to the authorities. Ho'. as

• lady to whom he was to hive been mar-
ried, died daring the drAsear • ofVan
Ostrand'a imprisonment, it is Said- of
• grief and shame.
He perved twb years in prison, :when

Soon afterward he appeared in tbe vil-
lage of Delaware, Ohio, under the name
of Ryerson. Profdbging profotind piety,
he took an active and leading Part in
church affairs there, and in October, '74,
,was monied to the daughter of a • Pres-
• byterian minister of Ilelaware, a beauti-
• ful young lady but deacon years of age.
