The Bayfield Post, 1982-06-11, Page 1The Bayfield Post ISSUE A - 21 Editor's Corner Manipulation of the Market Place or the "Greed Game" Remember a few years ago when there was an alleged shortage of sugar. The price shot up like a July 4 Skyrocket. Restaurants took sugar bowls off tables and distributed the precious powder only on request. Housewives stopped canning fruit and making jam. Candy and products containing sugar doubled and tripled in price. Sugar became like powder- ed gold. Then the bubble burst. People became sus- picious of the big sugar companies, investi- gations took place, and the price of sugar came down. The sugar shortage was suddenly over. Another product to hit the shortage syndrome was coffee. The price of coffee then climbed higher than a healthy squirrel. People began hoarding it in their homes. Coffee, it was feared, might disappear all together. The price of coffee tripled and the big coffee importers burped all the way to the bank. Then the so-called shortage just evaporated leaving the coffee people with what they wanted in the first place, a lot more money. Orange juice and peanut butter were two items that tried to crash or cash in on the big money via the "Shortage" route and en- joyed some success. However the prize for the biggest con job ever to tread the "shortage trail" was the brainchild of the oil people, both producers and marketeers. Canada was going to run out of oia. within 20 years; Remember? Oil became the new liquid gold, "the heavenly manna" which meant economic and social disaster or survival depending on one's supply. The price of oil went from $2.00 a barrel to over $40,00 a barrel for openers, with a promise that it would soon be $100 a barrel, Natural Gas Companies soon became jealous of the new extravagant wealth of oil companies and found ready arguments why natural gas should cost as much as oil, even though there is so much in Canada we literally can't give it away at a fraction of its market price. Not to be outdone in the grab department, giant utilities like Ontario Hydro raised their prices dramatically and now want a 54% price increase over the next 3 years. Like gas we have more than enough electricity for our needs for years to come, yet these energy giants want to carve up the energy pie in three equal portions. Shortages or abundance has absolutely nothing to do with it. The law of supply and demand is a hoax. Shorta6,e of oil? Where? The fact is that countries are cutting production to dry up an oil flooded market. Oil shortage? With oil discoveries in the Atlantic and Arctic, Canada could be oil self-sufficient by 1990, that is if the oil companies and the Federal and Provincial Governments could control their appetite for money, Friday, June 11, 1982 Free Copy It's all a big game folks and it's called Greed. But the greed game is taking its toll. It's bleeding people, it's bleeding the economy, it's bleeding the country and the world. The players in the greed game, whether they be governments, companies, or individuals are finding out that there are eventually only losers in the greed game. You can win only for a time, then everyone loses. Yes Virginia, greedy people are stupid people.
