The Bayfield Post, 1981-10-29, Page 3FROM THE Pastor's Desk
This coming Sunday will be All Saints Day.
It is a time when the Church remembers
before God all who have faithfully served
it in generations past. It is also a time
to give thanks for all that their memory
means to us and to endeavour to follow where
they have set a good example.
Yet we must not make of our forbears more
than they would have made of themselves.
They too, were prey to the temptations which
beset human existence. They too, could be
every bit as cold and indifferent as we. Any
reading of church history either on a world-
wide or local scale would reveal that there
are many aspects of the church's past which
are not overly praiseworthy. But the church
has survived and it continues to witness to
the grace and merit of Jesus Christ even when
it is unable to point to its own accomplish-
ments.
So this Sunday, as we recall the faith of our
fathers and mothers, let us remember the great
hardship; they went through in order to
establish a productive and decent way of life.
Let us also remember that even in those times
of uncertainty they took the time to lay
down spiritual roots which have grown into
traditions which now sustain and edify us.
And finally, let us take to ourselves the con-
solation expressed by Caroline Norton:
For death and life, in ceaseless strife
Beat wild on this world's shore
And all our calm is in that balm
Not lost but gone before.
