"THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE"
ISSUE A-6
Editor's Corner
BY BOB BURTON
The Zurich News is one week old to -day.
We hope the residents of Zurich will make it
into a sought-after community newspaper by
contributing news items and expressing views
on the different aspects of our life here in
Huron County.
why did we begin the Zurich News?
Because Zurich needs its own paper. Its
citizens need a way to communicate with each
other.
We began the Zurich News so our advertisers
can have a much broader coverage. Advertise-
ments will automatically be in both papers -
with no increase in price.
Advertisers therefore in The Bayfield Post
and Zurich News will reach residents from
Bayfield, Zurich, Clinton, Hensall, Dashwood,
Grand Bend, Goderich, and points in between
because the paper is, and will be, in places
of business in these communities.
Naturally the heaviest concentration of papers
will be around Bayfield and Zurich.
We are hoping business people will respond to
this wider influence and see it to their
advantage to support their local paper.
The newspaper business naturally has its
hazards.
We as publishers have the responsibility of
telling it like it is without exaggeration.
We are not interested in the private lives of
people but only the public acts of citizens
which have public implications.
Some, a very few, don't want their public
conduct reported because that puts the spot-
light on them. These people are resentful
and suspicious of any reporter who reports
objectively. They don't want their conduct
reported because it is often less than pro-
fessional and not in the interest of the
community.
Then there are times we make mistakes in
judgement or in the use of language. For
example, in writing up the Bayfield Council
I regret using such descriptive language
when referring to Council's treatment of
a committee head. The descriptive language
was open to misinterpretation and could have
caused further embarrassment. The committee
head was very unfairly treated in public by
council and this was what was behind it all.

THE CLINTON PUBLIC HOSPITAL
Editor's Note - The following article is the
result of an interview your editor had recently
with Douglas S. Coventry, administrator of the
Clinton Public Hospital.
The Clinton Hospital was born back in 1905.
From that time it has grown to a 44 bed
facility - 30 active and 14 chronic.
The hospital employs 85 full time staff and
has a payroll of 1.5 million dollars a year.
The annual budget is presently at 2.2
million.
It was on Feb. 19, 1975 that the Clinton Hos-
pital was ordered closed by the Ontario Govern-
ment. However the decision was appealed and
The Supreme Court of Ontario ruled that the
Clinton Public Hospital could not be closed
because of the reasons alleged by the Govern-
ment. The reasons were financial in nature.
The hospital remained open.
Denis Timbrell, Minister of Health, has since
stated that there will be no more hospital
closings.
Clinton Hospital is currently in the middle
of a major fund raising project. Its pur-
pose is to meet needed expansion requirements.
Plans call for new emergency facilities, en-
larged out-patient space, new x-ray rooms, and
an expanded physiotherapy facility.
Total cost is estimated at $866,000.00. The
Ontario Ministry of Health is expected to con-
tribute $303,000.00 in grants. Huron County's
share is $110,000.00. The Hospital Capital
Fund will provide $100,000.00 The remaining
$353,000.00 is to be raised by public subscrip-
tion.
At present the hospital has reached about 25%
of its campaign goal of $353,000.
We are extremely fortunate to have the
Clinton Public Hospital in our community.
Those of us who have had the mixed fortune to
have needed this medical facility know from
experience how professional the Clinton
Hospital and staff is.
The hospital board, its staff, from the
administrator on down, are true public servants
and deserve our support.
