Canon F. Harold Paull, L. Th. 1892 - 1981
Priest, Soldier (World War I), and above all,
a Gentle -man.
Some time ago, i was given a book from the
private library of Archdeacon Albert Jones,
Warden of Seager Hall, London.
Seager Hall was an off -shoot of Huron College
for the education and training of older men
for the Priesthood of the Anglican Church.
The book was the Autobiography of Duff
Cooper, the Viscount Norwich. He named it
"Old men Forget" (from Shakespeare's Henry V).
1 gave the book to Canon Paull to read as he
had met the author many years ago and I knew
that he would be interested in reading it.
When he returned the book I noted that he had
marked the final paragraph with the notation,
"I wish :t had written this:"
I quote from this book, "As I said at the
beginning of this book, 1 find that old age has
many compensations, and still I feel, as I felt
in my youth, that the old should make way for
the young and give them their opportunity
while they yet have vision to inspire them,
energy to perform and time to achieve.
1 have never felt that the contemplation of the
past, with the knowledge that it cannot come
again, need be a source of sorrow. The emotion
is like that aroused by looking through an
album of old photographs which recall happy
days, and if we find among them the faces of
friends who are no more we are glad to be re-
minded of the affection we felt for them. I
have written this book, and enjoyed writing it,
because 1 wanted to set down some of these
memories before they faded. Nor can the dear-
est and the most sacred of them be included.
Life has been good to me and.I am grateful.
My delight in it is as keen as ever and I
will thankfully accept as many more years as
may be granted. But, I am fond of change and
have welcomed it even when uncertain whether
it would be for the better; so, although I
am very glad to be where I am, I shall not be
too distressed when the summons from God comes
to go away. Autumn has always been my favourite
season, and evening has been for me the
pleasantest time of day. i love the sunlight
but 1 cannot fear the coming of the dark."
(1 agree with dear Canon Paull - "I wish that
I had written this:")
