SANDB?R CLOSES HARBOUR - Bayfield
Strong north winds th.4_r past week deposited
enough sand at the mouth of the Bayfield River
to effectively close the harbour. One fishing
boat with a shallow draught was the only fish-
ing boat able to get in and out. The other
boats are tied up at Goderich. Bob McGraw
and Don McLeod of McGraw and McLeod Fisher-
ies, respectively, were not too happy about it.
But who can fight "Mother Nature"?

do all the pulling. The rides are available

Come earlier rather than later. After all

We Canadians are a fortunate people. It
true we have problems, we heve our share
screwballs, we are no better than others
it comes to virtue, but we are free.
is
of
when
We are a free people. Beautifully free.
.Within the limits of common sense and respon-
sible behaviour we can say and do what we
please.
What's so new about this one might ask.
Nothing really, but when one watches the sad
events that are unfolding in Poland these days,
it brings the human charactr-r of our Canadian
way of life home in much sharper focus.
Many of us remember 1056 whe {;he sraa k o'
freedom glowed bright for a brief moment in
Hungary and how it was snuffed out by the
Russian Army.
In 1969 aspirations of freedom were born and
nurtured in Czechoslovakia until Communist
tanks ended their short life.
Now it's Poland's turn to learn the true
nature of Communism and to feel the helpless-
ness of living under the hammer and sickle.
What does it all prove? One thing and one
thing only. That a bully can physically over-
power and subject the defenseless and the
weak. Communists have shown again that steel
is stronger than flesh and that you can get
your way if you hold the gun.
What a barbarian way to live: If there ever
was a reason to justify the killing of another
human being, surely the taking of a free man's
right to act as a free man, is that reason.
When a people are chained and coralled like
animals, they have a right to use that degree
of force that will restore their freedom and
dignity as free men and women.
You can sit on another man, but you can't
make him like it. One day the Communist is
going to learn this. One day the chained
people of Asia and Eastern Europe will explode
and out of the blood and holocaust, freedom
will live again. If they don't, we might be
next.
