The Bayfield Post, 1981-11-05, Page 1The Bayfield Post "THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE" Lest We Forget Today we remember them. We remember their sacrifices. We remember what they did. We remember what they suffered in the pursuit of human dignity and peace. They left a land of freedom that we might inherit it. They died in war so we could live in peace. Because their lips are silenced we are free to speak. Because their legs are frozen in death we are able to walk where we please. Because they can no longer think and desire we can strive for excellence. Because their eyes are closed in darkness we can see the beauty of our lakes and countryside. They had the courage to die trusting we have the courage to live. To live as God- fearing people respecting one another as free men and women and as equals before a common Father. We Canadians have the following responsibili- ties therefore, To replace the desire to hurt with the desire to help. The desire to knock down with the desire to lift up. The desire to enslave with the desire to free and enhance. To replace the desire to keep people at our feet with one that will keep them in our heart. Today we remember them. ISSUE A-7 THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1981 gree Cupp IN FLANDERS FIELDS In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. 4 We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow, In Flanders Fields. by John i!cRae I saw a man today. He was standing on a corner With medals on his chest, And lines upon his face, His eyes deep in remembrance To the days when he was young. He is now 84 And selling poppies today. He remembers.
