THURSDAY, :1I'lt'iI. 1:►tl:., I'►'0 R•EFORMIIG THE SCHOOLS • Never before have the schools of Ontario been subjected to such a fire of criticism as for the past six months.' Evidently the 'system which has endued ' since the pioneer days of the province is no :longer fit. Teachers every'where are. clamoring for higher pair, •- While -:school boards feel that the • cost • of educating the rising generation is • becoming an in- tolerable burden. At the same time -thew ,-•-n -41.41 aerse ;criticism .of what- is being taught. The schooling is not practical. Children are taught - -what is of little Value to them, while studies which would help them to live a successful life are neglected. The new Minister of _ Education has done a good thing . in having a confer- ence -with the school inspectors from all over the -province. These have submitted a number of suggestions to the Government, and no doubt these embody the Very best thought upon the subject: •r :1l1 who have intelligently consider ,' ed the. tilatter appear to have real'hed the ct)l:• lilsion that the 'little country school should' go, and that consolidat- ed schools is one of the tiist.reforins to be introduced; -The, cost of educating children •in the small country schools is ridicul- • ously. high in spite , of the fact that the teachers are• under pa:d and the whole institution conducted with the severest economy. There are'cases where the cost runs to:four or fits times as high per pupil as in the .town schools „where the teacher has a full room and good equipment. In a word, the 'rur41 •school is costly. and inetficie.'nt. This is' one. of the chief problems to be overcome, TILE IVILOS1'HY OF •LIFE . • Did it' ever occur ..too you that a man's life is full ofcrosses and temp - 'tat -Ions?
