Huron OPP investigating truck thefts Three -vehicle collision leads to impaired charges
Vehicle recovered,
semi-automatic rifle
still missing
The Huron County OPP, including
investigators from the Huron Country
Property Crimes Unit, is investigating a
recent string of pickup truck thefts that
occurred in the area last week.
In a five-hour window between late in
the evening of Nov. 9 into the early
morning hours of Nov. 10, four pickup
trucks were stolen in North Huron and
East Huron counties.
According to police, the stolen vehi-
cles included a Chevrolet Silverado,
which was taken from Reid Road, a GMC
Sierra from Belfast Road, a Dodge Ram
from Nature Centre Road and a GMC
Sierra from Brandon Road in Huron
East.
Though all the stolen trucks were
recovered in good condition, a Soviet
Simonov SKS Semi -Automatic rifle with
a laminate wood stock is still missing
after it had been left inside one of the
vehicles overnight.
Police said the stolen pickups were all
left unlocked, with some owners leaving
keys in the ignition or under floor mats,
resulting in thefts which could've been
prevented had owners simply removed
keys from the vehicles.
"Evidently, some property owners are
failing to take basic steps to secure their
property," said Huron County OPP Sgt.
Dale Bray in a press release, adding offic-
ers continue to investigate these kinds of
thefts. "Property owners need to con-
sider the fact that these stolen vehicles
allow criminals the opportunity to carry
out further crimes in our local commu-
nities. Let's not make it easy for these
criminals. Be proactive and do your part
around home by securing your vehicles.
Together we can make a difference in
reducing criminal activity in our
neighbourhoods'
Police are asking anyone with infor-
mation regarding these thefts to contact

Those wishing to remain anonymous
can call Crime Stoppers at 1 -800 -222 -

A transport truck driver faces impaired driving
charges after being involved in a three -vehicle colli-
sion in North Huron.
According to Huron County OPP, officers along
with firefighters from the Blyth Fire Department and
Huron County paramedics responded to the colli-
sion at around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
According to police, the 62 -year-old driver of a
Honda Accord was southbound on London Road
when he was in the process of slowing down to make
a right tum onto Nature Centre Road.
A minivan driven by a 16 -year-old female that was
following the Accord slid into its rear and caused it to
enter into the northbound lane of traffic.
A northbound transport truck and trailer carrying
a load of salt then collided with the Accord.
The transport continued northbound for another
1300 metres, where the truck and taller left the road-
way into the west ditch.
The trailer rolled, however, the load of salt did not
spill.
Upon speaking with the driver on the transport,
OPP said officers determined he had been drinking
alcohol and was displaying signs of impairment.
He was arrested for impaired driving and trans-
ported to the detachment for breath tests.
Police said he provided two samples of his breath,
with both being above the legal limit.
As a result, a 43 -year-old man from Central Huron
has been charged with impaired driving and drive
motor vehicle - over 80 milligrams of alcohol.
He received an automatic 90 -day driver's license
suspension and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario
Court of Justice in Goderich on Dec. 23.
The driver of the Accord was transported to Wing -
ham and District Hospital with minor injuries, while
the driver and passenger of the minivan were
uninjured.
