Hockey night supports local service groups

For many Canadians, hockey is a
sport best enjoyed in the company of
old friends and an ice-cold beer.
But, for Seaforth Ward Councillors
Nathan Marshall and Bob Fisher, get-
ting together for a game is even better
when it can help give back to the
community.
In an effort to give everyone a place
to come together and enjoy a little
camaraderie while enjoying the coun-
try's national pastime, Marshall and
Fisher organized Seaforth Fundraising
Sports Night.
Now, for one night every month, local
hockey fans are being given the chance
to get together and cheer on their
favorite teams, all while donating
money to several service groups.
"One of the reasons we wanted to do
this was that we had talked a lot and
there isn't a place to have a drink and
watch a game in town and this is a place
to do that," said Coun. Nathan Marshall,
adding another objective of the event
was to bring people into the commu-
nity centre to make sure it's being used
to its full potential. "And all the money
raised will be going to five organiza-
tions in town."
Groups benefitting from the Seaforth
Fundraising Sports Nights include local
Optimist and Lions chapters, as well as
Seaforth Broomball, Exeter-Seaforth
Ringette and Seaforth Minor Hockey.
"Every night it will be the last Thurs-
day of the month," explained Marshall,
adding the only planned change will be
for December's game due to busy
schedules around the holidays. "Each
night the money will go into an account
and then at the end we'll split it evenly
between the fi ve organizations."
There's no entry fee but guests can
purchase food and drinks to help sup-
port the cause.
Warren Small of the Seaforth Opti-
mist Club said he's looking forward to
working in co-operation with other
service groups throughout the fundrais-
ing events.
"We need more of that because we're
a small community," he explained. "We
all have small clubs and we're all trying
to do the same thing - just put money
back into the community - so we need
to do more of these things together and
I think this is a great start."
Each game will feature a different
team, in hopes that everyone will get a
chance to see their favorites. No won-
der, as Marshall cheers for the Washing-
ton Capitals and Fisher for the Chicago
Blackhawks.
"We think it's going to be a really
great time," said Marshall. "It's going to
be great entertainment and you get to
help out the organizations that are
involved, it's a really easy way to donate
some money."
The group's next game, featuring the
Toronto Maple Leafs and Phoenix Coy-
otes is scheduled for Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.
Because this is a 19+ event, only those
of legal age will be permitted.
