Hungry for Action in Huron

The best way to fully understand pov-
erty is to experience it for oneself. This
was the main idea behind Hungry for
Action in Huron, a poverty simulation
exercise held at the Health and Library
Complex in Clinton on Nov. 4.
Various people attended the unique
and interactive event, including local
business leaders, politicians, service
providers and community members.
Everyone involved took on the roles of
Huron County residents living in pov-
erty and learned what living such a life
really entails. The event was modeled
after other similar initiatives that have
taken place in other areas.
At the end of the simulation exercise,
a complimentary lunch consisting of
fresh, local and easily attainable ingre-
dients was served, which was followed
by a brief discussion regarding the
insights that were gained throughout
the day and recommended next steps.
The poverty simulation was spon-
sored by the Poverty to Prosperity in
Huron
Network and was a part of a larger
initiative coordinated by the Ontario
Society of Nutrition Professionals in
Public Health, an organization of regis-
tered dietitians working in public
health in Ontario. Important support-
ers of the event included the Huron
One of the first stops in the simulation
exercise was the "bank." Participants
had a set, monthly budget they had
to stick to despite certain surprise
payments that came their way.
