Seaforth Lions celebrate 90 years
Whitney South
Celebrating their 90th year
in the community, the Sea -
forth Lions are getting set to
put on an event like no other
on July 1.
The theme, a 1920s family
day at the park, hopes to bring
back memories for the com-
munity, as well as make new
ones.
"We're going to celebrate
the past and look toward the
future," said Lion Cathy Elliott,
adding how wonderful it is to
be able to look out into the
community and really get to
know people. "We're looking
to put together something to
give back and celebrate the 90
years the community has
helped us and we want to cel-
ebrate together."
The club was started in the
fall of 1924, and the develop-
ment of Lions Park began the
very next year.
Annual activities like the
Halloween Frolic and Santa's
visits to town - just to name a
few - soon followed, while the
pool and park continued to be
upgraded over the years.
Events like the trout derby,
Santa Claus parade and elimi-
nation draw dinner and dance
continue to bring in crowds.
With a list of accomplish-
ments too numerous to name,
the club has seen a lot of
changes and can still see
many opportunities.
One of those opportunities
is the chance to bring in some
new blood, something the
club hopes they may see in
the future.
"When I joined there were
61 members, now we have
16," said Lion Bob Beutten-
miller, one of the club's long-
est serving members. "We'd
love to see more people come
Lions Summer Carnival 1955
out and join us."
For Lion Doug Elliott, get-
ting the chance to work with
the club is something more
people should take advantage
of.
"We see needs in the com-
munity that maybe other
people don't see," he said.
"It's about more than just
writing a cheque, it's about
giving time and effort."
With it's deep roots in the
community, the Seaforth
Lions have always played a big
part in fundraising for local
causes, most recently donat-
ing to the Drive for Dean.
"I don't think there's any-
one in the community that
hasn't been touched by some-
thing the Lions Club has
done," said Lions president
Paul Stephen. "Whether it's a
community facility, local fun-
draiser or children's
activities."
For Stephen, the sense of
community he sees through-
out Seaforth was something
he wasn't used to growing up
in Toronto.
"At the Lions Club, we want
to enjoy the fellowship of the
community that's why most of
us do what we do to begin
with. We're looking forward to
enjoying a day with the people
we serve on an annual basis
and try and better this
community.
"Hopefully we'll get a few
members out of it too," he
laughed.
