Some area roads closed due to torrential rains, flooding
Highway 8 east of
Seaforth closed

Torrential downpours in Sea -
forth and across much of south-
western Ontario on Tues., July 8,
prompted police to close some
area roads.
After Environment Canada
issued a heavy rainfall warn-
ing, OPP closed flooded roads
in Huron and Perth counties
and set up emergency
detours.
In Perth County, Highway 8
between Line 182 and Hen-
sall Road was closed for
approximately two hours,
from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. due to
flooding.
"The main flooding across
the highway occurred
between Lines 182 and 183,"
said Const. Kees Wijnands of
the Perth County OPP, noting
that water also rose at the
intersection of Highway 8 and
Line 183, forcing police to
divert traffic down Hensall
Road.
The main flooding took
place at a large concrete cul-
vert that runs underneath
Highway 8.
"I believe this is normally a
small stream that flows into the
Bayfield River. Yesterday it was
not such a small stream," he
added.
In addition, water that was
crossing over the highway from
north to south was causing the
gravel shoulder in a small area
around the culvert to wash
away. The highway department
accessed the situation and
gave the OPP the okay to re-
open Highway 8 after they
deemed it to be safe.
Const. Wijnands said highway
closures due to flooding doesn't
happen very often, however he
did recall Highway 8 east of
Shakespeare was badly dam-
aged several years ago, due to
torrential rains and flooding in
the area.
Close to 25 mm of rain fell in
some parts across southwest-
ern Ontario that day, including
London and the surrounding
areas.
"That's a good soaking
rainfall," said Geoff Coulson,
a warning preparedness
meteorologist with Environ-
ment Canada. "The way that
rain falls at this time of the
year can be very sudden and
very intense."
Coulson said some summer
storms can dump as much as
50 mm of rain in less than an
hour.
"That's when we start to
run into concerns of flash
flooding, where that much
rain falls in such a short
period of time that the cul-
verts and the drainage areas
can't cope."
Perth County OPP re-
opened Highway 8 around 4
p.m., after water levels
receded.

Local farmer recognized by Ontario Nature
On June 21, Ontario
Nature, a leading conserva-
tion organization, recog-
nized the exceptional con-
tributions to natural habitat
protection made by six indi-
viduals and two groups.
Tom Lobb, a local farmer
and lifelong naturalist,
received the Ontario Nature

outstanding contribution to
the organization.
Lobb has been
involved with wood tur-
tle monitoring and pro-
