Taking a walk in their shoes
CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 4
I looked behind me,
only to see the guy stop
dead in his tracks, turn
around and walk briskly
away.
The cop asked me what
was going on - but I had
no words.
I was so relieved the
pursuit was over I said
nothing. Instead, I turned
around headed to the
house.
My friend was happy to
have found me, but after
telling her my story she
quicldy changed her tune.
Once again she told me
her friend was harmless; I
had obviously misunder-
stood or done something
to encourage him.
I kept thinking, what if
she was right?
What could I have done
different?
Was it all really my
fault?
With those and many
more thoughts swimming
around in my head, I
went to bed - and stayed
there for the remainder of
the weekend.
When all was said and
done I never contacted
the police, never tried to
press charges and basi-
cally tried to put the
whole ordeal out of my
head.
After all, what was the
point in saying anything
to anyone if my own
friend didn't believe me?
As days went by, the
bruises and scrapes faded
from my wrists and arms,
but unfortunately the
feeling of helplessness
wouldn't - not for a long
time.
So when I hear people
talk about how someone
like Ghomeshi couldn't
have possibly done these
things, or how his accus-
ers are probably lying just
to 'cash in,' it brings it all
back.
As women, we're some-
times made to believe
we're powerless, espe-
cially when it comes to
our bodies.
Not that long ago, I read

a study conducted by a
university in the U.S. in
regards to how men view
the act of approaching
women at a bar.
The study said that
regardless of whether or
not the woman clearly
declared her lack of inter-
est, it was only when she
said she had a boyfriend
that the men backed off.
Seems some young
men have more respect
for the so-called property
of their own gender than
they do for the opinion of
the fairer sex.
In regards to Ghome-
shi, the same could be
said for the initial outrage
of the population.
The women were
blamed, the male celeb-
rity immediately exoner-
ated in the eyes of the
public.
It's not good, and it's
not fair, but it happened.
To assume someone is
innocent of a crime due
to their celebrity status
makes about as much
sense as trying to nail
Jell-O to a tree, and to
blame a victim for an act
of violence against them,
even less.
Sure, you grew up
admiring this person's
achievements, but how
can you claim to really
know someone you've
never met?
Heck, in journalism we
were taught interviewers
like Ghomeshi were peo-
ple we should strive to
emulate. That a career
like his was something we
should strive for, to be in
the spotlight, the pride of
Canada.
We all want to assume
the best in people - but if
we turn a blind eye or
make assumptions of
innocence purely based
on celebrity, we do noth-
ing to diminish its power
over us as a society.
Look at the facts, not
the fiction.
Put yourselves in the
victim's shoes.
After all, you never
know when it may hap-
pen to you.
