Huron Expositor, 2014-08-27, Page 88 Huron Expositor • Wednesday, August 27, 2014 Halloween run for Alzheimer's this October For the Expositor In the spirit of Hallow- een, the Alzheimer Society of Huron County is host- ing their 2nd annual 5K and 10K runs, this year on the trails of Central Huron. The Veenstra family has generously offered use of their trail behind the One Care and Alzheimer Huron offices. The trail is a hidden gem, a real treat, not trick. Packed with scenery and the fall col- ours arriving in time for October, the trail is said to be fantastic to run through. "This is a great opportu- nity to run one of the best trails Huron County has to offer," said Brittany Wil- liams, events coordinator at Alzheimer Huron. "The trail is great to run on, hard packed and dry through the wooded por- tions. The course isn't exclusively trail terrain, especially for those run- ning the 10K, it's more of a taste of trail running that you'd never experience running in a city, but a sturdy route that isn't overly challenging for those just starting out either. At the end of the course, Letters to the editor AlzheimerSociety HURON COUNTY runners can take advan- tage of the spooky photo booth and document their sweaty achievement in their favourite Halloween gear. Early bird registration is open until Aug. 31, and the first 100 participants to register by Sept. 19 will receive a performance t -shirt. The Society is still look- ing for volunteers to help with registration the day of the run, man water sta- tions along the route and assist with the closing cer- emonies. This is a great opportunity for high school students to get their hours - and the bonus is everyone, run- ners and volunteers alike, can pull out their Hallow- een costumes early. Last year's "Glimmer in the Darkness Twilight Run" was a successful event, despite weather warnings causing a re- scheduled race date. Like last year, the funds raised at the run will remain in our communities to sup- port the increase in the demand for programs and services as more people are being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. The Alzheimer Society of Huron County provides information, education and support through indi- vidual counselling and support groups to persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, their caregivers, families, health professionals and the general public. The services offered are free of charge, but the society relies on commu- nity support to keep the doors open and continue to offer the services it provides. Early bird registration is $30 (5K) and $40 (10K) until Aug. 30th. Be sure to register early for your performance t -shirt. As the Seaforth Agricultural Society's directors and volun- teers are busy preparing for the 169th fair and all the fun - filled events it brings, the ambassador committee is also preparing for the ambassador competitions and are seeking people interested in running in two age categories: junior Ambassador and Fall Fair ambassador. We encourage all young people to come out and get involved in the fair and agri- cultural society in a different way than just entering items in the school sections or vis- iting the fair. These opportunities pro- vide many great chances to meet some new friends, make some connections, network, improve your pub- lic speaking skills and self confidence. But most of all, have an experience you will never forget. It has been a very positive and rewarding experience for both of the current ambassadors: Maranda Klaver, current junior ambassador; and Danika Klaver, current Seaforth Fall Fair ambassador. It is important that we have an ambassador for Seaforth to show our com- munity is alive and well. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed and you will have the experience of a lifetime. To be eligible for either the junior ambassador or the Fall Fair ambassador titles, the competition is open to males or females aged 12 to 16 in 2014 (for junior) and males or females aged 17 to 23 for the Fall Fair ambassador. The contestants will be responsible for a short speech of two to three minutes on agriculture or fairs, partaking in an interview with the judges, as well as answer a short impromptu question. The Fall Fair ambassador competition will be held ATTENTION ADVERTISERS!
