Seeking Volunteers for
Sites across County
For the Expositor
Huron Arts & Heritage Net-
work is pleased to announce
that Doors Open is returning
Sept. 13 and 14 with the biggest
event to date.
"This year's theme, "Re -Imag-
ine Huron: Step into Our Sto-
ries," encourages us to look at
things we think we know with
fresh eyes and to appreciate the
history and stories of our com-
munities," says Deb Sholdice,
chair of the Huron Arts & Herit-
age Network.
Doors Open Huron County
features 37 sites across the
County open to the public. In
addition, there are three historic
tours, two guided hikes, a
stained glass tour and a speak-
ers' series. From private homes
to unique public facilities, busi-
nesses to local trails, there's a
site and something to do for
everyone.
Of course, an event of this size
only happens with the work of
many dedicated people, includ-
ing volunteers.
"It takes about 100 volunteers
to make the weekend work," says
Rick Sickinger, Cultural Devel-
opment Officer for the County of
Huron. "They are the face of the
event, greeting visitors and
answering questions. We really
couldn't do the event without
them."
Huron Arts & Heritage Net-
work (HAHN) is currently
recruiting volunteers for the
weekend.
Shifts are approximately four
hours and are morning or after-
noon, Saturday and/or Sunday.
Volunteers are needed at sites in
Bayfield, Blyth, Brussels, Clin-
ton, Egmondville, Goderich,
Hensall, Seaforth, Wingham and
Zurich.
To volunteer, please fill out
the form at www.creativehuron.
ca or call 519-482-5457, x8.
There will be brief volunteer
training sessions in the week
before Doors Open in three
locations - Goderich, Zurich &
Blyth. Volunteers will be asked
to attend one session. In addi-
tion, there will be a thank you
BBQ for volunteers immediately
following Doors Open on the
Sunday evening at the Emer-
gency Training Services Centre
in Blyth.
With over 2000 visitors, Doors
Open is one of the largest events
in the county and attracts locals
and tourists alike. HAHN pro-
duced the first Doors Open
Huron County event in 2008,
with its partners in the heritage
sector and with municipal gov-
ernment. Two years later in 2010
another Doors Open Haunted
Huron occurred and in 2012 the
Doors Open theme was Defend-
ing a Nation. Doors Open Huron
County is made possible
through the support of the
Department of Canadian Herit-
age, the County of Huron and
the Municipality of Bluewater,
Town of Goderich and Township
of North Huron.

POLICE BRIEFS
ATV rider charged with
impaired driving
SOUTH HURON - Huron County OPP
officers were dispatched to a resi-
dence on McTaggart Line, where a col-
lision had occurred on private prop-
erty just after 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 20.
Investigation revealed that an All -Ter-
rain Vehicle (ATV) had flipped while
being operated on a residential drive-
way. As a result of the crash, the male
rider was transported to, and treated at
a local hospital for his minor injuries.
The rider, who displayed signs of impair-
ment was subsequently administered
a breathalizer test, which he failed.
A 32 -year-old Grand Bend man has
been charged as impaired and will
appear at the Goderich Court of Justice
on Sept. 15, to answer to these charges.
Construction
worker injured
GODERICH — Local police were
recently dispatched to North Har-
bour Road in Goderich, in response to
injuries sustained by a construction
worker on the afternoon of Aug. 19.
Investigation revealed a construc-
tion company was using a barge as
a worksite while doing repair work to
the North Harbour break -wall, located
approximately 1 kilometre off -shore.
The barge, which housed a tracked
excavator, was held in place against the
break -wall by a tug boat and cables.
As a worker was securing the barge
closer to the wall, the excavator
reversed slightly on the deck while a
large wave struck the barge, caus-
ing the worker to lose his footing
and step backwards into the exca-
vator's tracks. The worker's legs
became caught underneath the
track for a short period of time.
The 71 -year-old male worker from Lon-
don was immediately returned to shore
by boat, from where he was transported
to a local hospital by Huron County
EMS with non -life threatening injuries.
Ontario Ministry of Labour inspectors
attended the scene and are continu-
ing their investigation into this incident.

bile trail near Mill Street in Blyth. The
