The 2014 annual Huron County
plowing match took over Walton
this year Aug. 21 and 22 at the
Shortreed farm on Blyth Road.
"It's been really well attended
this year," said Brian McGavin,
president of the Huron County
plowmen's association. "By the
looks of the fields we have a lot of
people participating, coming from
everywhere, as far as Owen Sound,
to local."
The local plowing match is held
once a year and moves throughout
the county, usually ending up in
the township the current county
Warden calls home. This year's
warden, Joe Steffler, hails from
Huron East.
Fifty-three plowers competed
this year, a few less than last year,
which saw 62 competitors.
Participants of the county plow-
ing matches compete for points to
qualify for the International Plow-
ing Match, which this year is being
held in Ivy, Ont., Sept. 16-20.
The event also featured a break-
fast, as well as exhibitors and the
Queen of the Furrow competition.
But, for McGavin, as for most, it
was all about the plowing.
"The competition looks pretty
stiff this year," he said, adding
Thursday's 4H Sod Busters compe-
tition was so close, the awards
came down to half points. "A com-
ment from one of the competitors
was - holy smokes, this is just like
competitng at the international
plowing match, because there's so
many great plowers here."
Warm weather and sunny skies made for a beautiful couple days.
A prominent fixture at the match
is the variety of methods used,
from antique plows and horses to
modern machines.
McGavin said he thought it was
important for young people to see
the antiques.
"If you talk to those guys, it's just
a neat club they have, they're a
really tight group," he said. "And it
shows the kids the plowing of the
past, how it all started with the
horses:'
At the end of the day, a beautiful
day and a lot of work made this
year's event a winner.
"I just want to thank everyone for
putting in so much hard work," said
McGavin. "This year we had a
beautful site, the Shortreeds really
went above and beyond. Not to
mention it's all due to the executive
and committee members who have
made the match a success."
