Huron Expositor, 2014-08-20, Page 88 Huron Expositor • Wednesday, August 20, 2014 Get ready to cap off the summer with the West Coast Blues Fest Steph Smith QMI Agency The annual West Coast Blues Fest is set to return to Downtown Goderich with some great blues talent on Aug. 29 to Aug. 30 Friday night kicks off with the Walkabout Blues tour that features high-calibre talent at eight different locations around Goderich's his- toric downtown. From 8:30 p.m. to close enjoy all that Blues has to offer. Admission to the tour is $10/ person. Tickets can be purchased at the venues the night of the tour, however advanced tickets are rec- ommended to secure your spot. The first location is different from last year as it takes place at Joe Fri- day's Sport Saloon where Pigeon Jones will be playing. Paddy O'Neils will be featuring the Larry Myles Band, and just down the street, the Matt Weidinger Band will be performing at the Bistro located at the Livery Theatre. Just like last year, Chuckee Zehr will be performing at Pat & Kevin's on the Square. Music lovers will once again be entertained by Rick Taylor at Elizabeth's Art Gallery. Last, but definitely not least, West Street Willy's Eatery wel- comes back Bud Mahon & The Pickups, with the Park House host- ing the Tim Woodcock Band. The main event will be taking place Saturday night, with doors at the Livery Theatre opening at 6:30 p.m. It will be a licensed event under a giant outdoor tent, rain or shine. This year's headliner Karp Foley, a collaboration of the Sue Foley Band and Peter Karp, will be per- forming in the prime time slot of 9 p.m. At twenty-one, Sue was living in Austin, TX, recording for Antone's Records, the legendary blues label. Her first release Young Girl Blues quickly established her as a blues guitarist. Foley has shared the stage with such artists as BB King, Buddy Guy, Lucinda Williams and Tom Petty, winning the prestigious Juno Award for her critically acclaimed album Love Coming Down as well as seventeen Maple Blues Awards. Peter's music is fueled by what he calls the Yankee -Rebel juxtapo- sition. He first caught national attention with help from Rolling Stone guitarist Mick Taylor who recorded and toured with Karp on his first label release The Turning Point. He further established him- self on the nationally as a critically acclaimed songwriter, guitarist and pianist with the release of his Blind Pig debut entitled Shadows and Cracks. At 11 p.m., two-time Juno and seven -time Maple Blues winner, Jack de Keyzer will take the main stage by storm. De Keyzer has been described as the finest blues guitar- ist in Canada by Jeff Healey, play- ing on average 180 shows world- wide in locations including the Arctic Circle, Mexico and Greece. He has played and recorded with artists such as Etta James, Ronnie Hawkins, Bo Diddley and Blue Rodeo. In addition to the Walkabout Blues tour and the main event, there will be a Motorcycle Show and Shine downtown on Saturday afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m., as well as a free concert put on by the Chris Murphy Band with special guests on Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Courthouse Park bandstand. Over its nine years, the event has become one of town's most popu- lar summer events. President John Harrison said last year's Walkabout Blues attracted about 1, 350 people and the Satur- day's festivities attracted roughly 1,000, many who are visiting from out of town. "We've had people from Mon- treal, Kingston, Peterborough, the entire Greater Toronto Area, Wind- sor, London, Owen Sound and even from New York state, it's also supported very well locally. There are some really hardcore blues lov- ers out there," Harrison said. The organization is not-for- profit, so everything that is made off the weekend is donated back into community, as well as putting on free concert during the Canada Day celebrations.
