Steph Smith
QMI Agency
The annual West Coast Blues
Fest is set to return to Downtown
Goderich with some great blues
talent on Aug. 29 to Aug. 30
Friday night kicks off with the
Walkabout Blues tour that features
high-calibre talent at eight different
locations around Goderich's his-
toric downtown. From 8:30 p.m. to
close enjoy all that Blues has to
offer. Admission to the tour is $10/
person. Tickets can be purchased
at the venues the night of the tour,
however advanced tickets are rec-
ommended to secure your spot.
The first location is different from
last year as it takes place at Joe Fri-
day's Sport Saloon where Pigeon
Jones will be playing. Paddy
O'Neils will be featuring the Larry
Myles Band, and just down the
street, the Matt Weidinger Band
will be performing at the Bistro
located at the Livery Theatre.
Just like last year, Chuckee Zehr
will be performing at Pat & Kevin's
on the Square. Music lovers will
once again be entertained by Rick
Taylor at Elizabeth's Art Gallery.
Last, but definitely not least,
West Street Willy's Eatery wel-
comes back Bud Mahon & The
Pickups, with the Park House host-
ing the Tim Woodcock Band.
The main event will be taking
place Saturday night, with doors at
the Livery Theatre opening at 6:30
p.m. It will be a licensed event
under a giant outdoor tent, rain or
shine.
This year's headliner Karp Foley,
a collaboration of the Sue Foley
Band and Peter Karp, will be per-
forming in the prime time slot of 9
p.m. At twenty-one, Sue was living
in Austin, TX, recording for
Antone's Records, the legendary
blues label. Her first release Young
Girl Blues quickly established her
as a blues guitarist. Foley has
shared the stage with such artists
as BB King, Buddy Guy, Lucinda
Williams and Tom Petty, winning
the prestigious Juno Award for her
critically acclaimed album Love
Coming Down as well as seventeen
Maple Blues Awards.
Peter's music is fueled by what
he calls the Yankee -Rebel juxtapo-
sition. He first caught national
attention with help from Rolling
Stone guitarist Mick Taylor who
recorded and toured with Karp on
his first label release The Turning
Point. He further established him-
self on the nationally as a critically
acclaimed songwriter, guitarist and
pianist with the release of his Blind
Pig debut entitled Shadows and
Cracks.
At 11 p.m., two-time Juno and
seven -time Maple Blues winner,
Jack de Keyzer will take the main
stage by storm. De Keyzer has been
described as the finest blues guitar-
ist in Canada by Jeff Healey, play-
ing on average 180 shows world-
wide in locations including the
Arctic Circle, Mexico and Greece.
He has played and recorded with
artists such as Etta James, Ronnie
Hawkins, Bo Diddley and Blue
Rodeo.
