Over 800 tickets were sold, and in the end, Home- town Heroes raised over $40,000. The funds went to support three separate local organizations aimed at improving health and wellness: the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital, the YMCA Strong Kids Program and the Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health. Thank you to Gwen Devereaux, Karen Davis, Anne - Marie Thomson and Brian O'Reilly for your tireless efforts. Without your commitment, this game could never have happened and thank you to all of the volun- teers who helped make Hometown Heroes a success. Thank you to Garb & Gear Source for Sports for working so hard on the uniforms and for delivering them on such a tight timeline, and thank you to the Goderich Print Shop as well for delivering on all our printing needs. t , P ,-, , ..... e OF You are invited to attend these area churches ST. Thank you, Jerry Allin Seaforth Donating blood can save a life - including the donor's To the Editor: After reading a letter in a previous week's paper regarding blood donation, I was reminded of the many ways that blood donation can change lives. My spouse (Dale Baechler) was a dedicated volunteer in the community, serving as a firefighter for 30 years and delivering meals on wheels. Dale was also commit- ted to donating blood as often as he could. During one of his donation appointments he was unable to donate because of low iron levels. This was not alarming at the time, but when he made additional attempts to donate and was turned away for the same reason, it prompted him to see a doctor, and ultimately led to his cancer diagnosis. Although his life was not saved, his visit to the blood donor clinic got the ball rolling on diagnosing his ill- ness and likely allowed us to have more days with him. People are often hesitant to volunteer in the commu- nity because of the time commitment. Donating blood, even just once, will not take up a lot of your time and can make a huge difference. However, if the potential to save many lives is not enough to encourage you to donate blood, then keep in mind the life you save might even be your own.
