Senior hockey is making
it's way back to Seaforth this
fall.
The Huron East Cente-
naires are relocating from
Goderich and are set to
make their Huron East debut
on Oct. 4.
"The team was in Goder-
ich 20 years give or take, and
essentially the market there
died off," said general man-
ager Tim McNaughton, who
will be sticking with the team
after the move. "We had very
little fan support and very lit-
tle support from the com-
munity as far as fundraising,
so at that point in time we
decided we would have to
fold or find a more sustaina-
ble area."
McNaughton explained
being from Seaforth, the
move just made sense.
"The decision was it was a
good place to be able to fun-
draise and be able to draw
players to be close to the
major centres, so it seemed
like a good fit at the time."
The first step was to find
out if the league would allow
the move, and the team
could find an executive and
start the fundraising
process.
"We've gotten that far, the
league said yes, so we're just
waiting for the season to
start now," said
McNaughton, adding train-
ing camp with start at the
Seaforth arena on Sept. 12.
And so the Centenaires
were born, again.
In the past, the name had
been dedicated to a Junior D
team in Ontario Hockey
Association (OHA), who
played in Seaforth from 1975
through 2002. The team won
the OHA Cup, the OHA's Jun-
ior D championship, in
1985-86.
Centenaires alumni
include NHLers Dave McL1-
wain, Boyd Devereaux and
Mike Watt.
"The response so far has
been very positive, as we
expected," said board
member Bill Tremeer.
"There's a lot of work
involved to get a team off
the ground, but we're con-
fident Seaforth is the place
we'll be able to find a lot of
support. But, we made it
the Huron East Centenaires
for a reason, we want to
increase our draw and
include Brussels and Kip -
pen, places like that."
Tremeer is just one third
of the team's leadership
group, which also includes
Graham Nesbitt and Pete
Martene as active board
members. Brett Lee, who will
take charge of marketing and
promotions, is looking to
provide an entertainment
package for all ages and
hopes to work closely with
the minor sports groups to
promote post -minor hockey.
"Seaforth was one of those
places that was deemed a
hockey town for years and
years that basically ran out of
hockey, which has hap-
pened all over the place, not
every town can run a team,"
said McNaughton, adding
the town's hockey history
was a big jumping off point
as to whether they could sus-
tain a team or not. "We knew
for a fact the town wanted
hockey and people would
support hockey."
McNaughton will pull
double duty, sharing coach-
ing duties with Scott Hen-
derson a local Seaforth
hockey star who formerly
played Junior B in Sarnia, as
well as for the rival Clinton
Radars, with whom he still
holds several records.
The Centenaires season
opener starts at 7:30 p.m.
against the Milverton 4
Wheel Drives at the Seaforth
arena on Oct. 4.
There will be a ceremonial
puck drop, as well as a few
in -game special events and a
bar will be set up in the
upstairs hall.

sponsoring the team can call
