The importance of concussion recognition and management
Dear Editor
I was so pleased to see
your article about local
hockey clubs adopting a con-
cussion baseline test and
education amongst the play-
ers and parents regarding
concussions. Concussions
can lead to traumatic brain
injury and also potential for
post concussion syndrome. I
have experienced this first
hand when five years ago I
was mounting my horse
without a helmet, for the first
time in 15 years I made the
mistake of choosing not to
wear my helmet, and the
stool that I was using gave
way from underneath me. It
has been five years of strug-
gling with symptoms and

with the Ontario medical system -
either by doctors not understanding the
complexity of brain injury or backlogs
in the system to seek treatment and
rehabilitation. Being that we run a large
dairy farm and have two small children,
I have not gotten not a lot of sleep over
the last five years, or modified my work
on the farm, which is essential for
recovering from a brain injury. After
just returning fr om testing in Chicago
USA two weeks ago, we now more accu-
rately understand what my treatment
protocol must be, and how my day to
day life must change, in order to reha-
bilitate, reduce symptoms and have a
better quality life. Early recognition and
diagnosis is key and it sounds like the
local sports clubs are finally waking up
to the realities and seriousness of brain
injury, and implementing the necessary
safety and recognition protocols.
There are two Brain Injury Associa-
tions in our area, Huron County and
Perth County, that are also a wealth of
information and support. The more
educated local residents become about
brain injury, the more those injuries
can be prevented in the first place, and
those that do get injured can be pro-
vided with the necessary medical, fam-
ily and community support that they
need to heal and carry on with their
lives.
Breath of Spring thank you
Dear Editor
On behalf of The Lung Association,
Huron -Perth and the Seaforth Agricul-
tural Society - Home Craft Division, we
would like to extend our sincere appre-
ciation to all who contributed to the
success of our annual fundraiser, Breath
of Spring, held April 16 at the Seaforth
Agriplex.
Special thanks to Mike Falconer of
Falhaven Farm and Nursery, Karen
Melady and Frank Ihrig of Hessenland
Country Inn for for their informative
and entertaining presentations and to
the always enjoyable emcee Trish Mac-
Gregor. A special acknowledgment to
the many individuals and businesses
who so generously donated items for
the auction table and to those who
came out to support the event.
More than 225 people from across
Huron County enjoyed Breath of Spring
and each host organization will realize
approximately $4000 net to support
their activities. Funds raised from this
event will support the Seaforth Agricul-
tural Society's refurbishment of the
Round House as well as fund the
