Huron Expositor, 2014-04-23, Page 66 Huron Expositor • Wednesday, April 23, 2014 letters to the editor Removing ice at Bayfield Arena an unwise and unfair move; reader To the Editor; The letter to the editor by John Murray Taylor regarding the removal of the ice from the Bayfield Arena mirrors the outrage and frustration of many in the community. The decision to remove the ice by a handful of council- lors without prior consultation and a public meeting to debate is despicable. Bluewater council no qualms about spending tens of thousands of dollars (and more) on surveys, studies, consulting fees, etc. but when presented with logical, con- cise accounting by user groups of the actual ice expenses it fell on deaf ears. One councillor in particular was like a man on a mission - the ice was to be removed no matter what! Why? Is there a hidden agenda or a conflict of interest? It makes no sense. Council demonstrated a lack of respect for BCH minor hockey, the fig- ure skating club, ice users, Bayfield and local tax payers, but worst of all, no respect for those who came before us, who through hard work, sacrifice and genuine community spirit built the arena and installed the ice many years ago. Council ignored the fact that 70 per cent of tax revenue for Bluewater ema- nates from west of Highway 21. Bayfield has grown steadily over the last three decades and if you want to continue to grow and thrive, you don't remove infrastructure and activities that attract newcomers and young families. I hope Bayfield Arena Community Partners and the user groups will con- tinue to battle with council as there is a municipal election coming. Councillors who ignore the wishes and common sense logic of the taxpay- ers risk their wrath in the ballot box. We were very happy to hear such positive comments as "it just gets bet- ter every year!' I would like to thank all the gener- ous donors, sponsors, guests, artists, committee members, community vol- unteers, and other supporters of this charitable fundraiser. Thirty-five volunteers were involved with the planning, set up and helping with the evenings activities and there were over 400 donors. You are all amazing. It was another sold -out event this year and the meal was wonderful and the crowd was fabulous. The local community really showed their spirit by making the 2014 Con- servation Dinner a record-setting event, raising a single -year record of almost $55,000 for community conser- vation projects of the Exeter Lions Club and the Ausable Bayfield Con- servation Foundation. This brings the total to more than $920,000 in net pro- ceeds raised over the 25 -year history of the event. Well done. I was very honoured to be Chair for this year's special anniversary event and to work with so many committed people who really care about our com- munity. Once again - Wow.
