The late Mr.' Webster was the el-
dest son of ' Mr. and Mrs. James
Webster, who as pioneers tookup. the
`land just south' of .Lucknow on the
Ashfield side, and. he grew to young
manhood amid pioneering operations
and privations.• Of that time he could
relate many interesting stories, for
he;,saw the heavy woods being clear -
,ed' away, and ' Lucknow grow from
very small beginnings.. Following, his
marriage, he took. a farm near Kin-
lough, . but after, a few unfavorable.
seasons, he took an implement agen-:
cy at Teeswater, and, proving a suc-
cessful salesman, he put • in a great.
many years in that line of work. He
was for a numberof years in Detroit
, and later at London, Ont., as the De-
troit climate never agreed with his
health. But n11 the time he neveir for-
got the , home of itis boyhood near
Lucknow'', and was a regular visitor
here. He was intensly. patriotic, and
though his family , were all on 'the
American side, and, he . was fliere
much of his time fsifee before the
War, he never thought of -transfer-`
ring his allegiance:: He was of a sec -
able' and kindly .'attire and honest
in his dealings, He was a Conserve=
tive in politics, a Methodist (later
•United Church) ' in religion.
