Students learn about Afghanistan experience from new Veteran
Gerard Creces
Clinton News -Record
Corporal Joel Fraser offered
students an intimate insight into
the lives of Canadian soldiers
stationed in Afghanistan during
the school's November 7 cere-
mony. Fraser, who now serves as
an OPP officer in Sarnia, spoke
at length about his tour in
Afghanistan, detailing the daily
life of a soldier, and the routines
and relationships that were
developed during his time over-
seas. Running through the talk
was a slide show of photos taken
during Fraser's time in
Afghanistan.
While there were many light-
hearted moments, such as Bob
- the adopted stray dog that had
saved Fraser's life on two sepa-
rate occasions - and the monot-
ony of meal time, eating the
same thing for months on end,
Fraser also spoke about losing
many friends to IEDs during
patrols in Afghanistan.
Though tragic, he said the
reality soon sunk in that it was a
risk of the job - a job he and his
comrades knew what to expect
before signing on. The most jar-
ring part of the experience, he
said, was when a fellow soldier
turned to suicide. That more
than anything, he said, had a
profound effect on him.
Intuition key to better business

Using your intuition was the
key message at the Bridges to
Better Business event held
Wednesday, November 6 at the
White Carnation in Holmesville.
Keynote speaker Tina Heath-
ers spoke of the need to balance
logical and emotional thinking
with gut feeling as a key to suc-
ceed in business decision-
making.
An entrepreneur with a back-
ground in time and stress man-
agement, customer service and
leadership, Heathers explained
to the audience there is a huge
difference between business
and personal decision making,
though the processes for both
are better when combined.
"When we make decisions
based on only a piece of knowl-
edge, we get in trouble," she
said. "Everyone has access to
intuition, but few people use it."
Logical thinking is based on
past experience, and lessons
taught or learned in life.
It accounts for about 95 per
cent of all decisions. However,
she said, sometimes everything
can look great on paper, be fac-
tually sound and still leave a
person with an uneasy feeling.
It's those times, she noted, that
intuition should take a greater
role.
Bridges to Better Business
also provided an opportunity for
local business owners to net-
work with one another, as well
as providing materials for those
looking to start a business of
their own.
The day wrapped up with a
panel discussion, made up of
experts from a number of Huron
County business representa-
tives, including the Huron Small
Business Enterprise and Devel-
opment Centres, Huron County
Economic Development, Arts
and Heritage Network, manu-
facturing association and
tourism.

It was a candid talk from the young
corporal, and the student body was
completely silent for the entirety, as he
spoke of the Afghan people, many of
whom did not know or understand
what the conflict was about. Some, he
said, believed they were still Russian
troops from a decades -old conflict.
However, wherever they went, he said,
people were happy for their help.
The ceremony was followed by a
reception in the school library, giving
students a chance to speak to Fraser
and other Veterans in a one-on-one
setting.
