Central Huron asking county to take stand against IWT

Central Huron is asking the county
to take a stand alongside other lower
tier municipalities and declare itself an
unwilling host to industrial wind tur-
bines (IWT).
At their November 5 meeting, coun-
cil debated the motion, which was put
forward by Councilor Alex Westerhout
last month, asking for support from
higher up.
While he said most people realize it
is more of a symbolic gesture, there is
still value to be had knowing both lev-
els of government have made their
stance known.
Deputy -Mayor Dave Jewitt said, as a
county councilor, he was not sure he
could support the motion at the higher
level. While he did vote in favour of
Central Huron's request to the county,
he said passing it at the county could
set an unrealistic standard for people.
Because of the amount of large scale
projects that have already received
Renewable Energy Approvals (REA)
from the province, taking a hard stand,
even if symbolic, could imply the
county has the means to enforce a ban
or fight the existing projects.
"I see that as a paradox," Jewitt said.
"I don't want to create unrealistic
expectations for people."
However, he said he could support a
motion calling for the county to sup-
port the stances of its lower tier
municipalities.
Coun. Alison Lobb was hesitant to
support the motion because of what
she saw as a weighted discussion.

Because of the large number of
municipal politicians in Huron
County's lower tiers that have
signed leases with energy com-
panies, there is a whole side
missing from the debate, she
explained. That is unfortunate
with any issue, she said, not just
turbines.
"I'm not sure I want turbines
either," she said. "That's why I
wouldn't sign (a lease
agreement)"
However, Lobb added, when
hydro towers were placed
through the county more than
20 years ago, the public had the
same apprehension and ani-
mosity toward them. Now, she
said, they are barely
noticeable.
In supporting the motion,
Coun. Burk Metzger said there
are many problems still not
resolved, including power stor-
age, selloff and health.
"Let's look for a minute, take
a breath and work toward a
long-term energy plan that
makes sense," he said.
