Clinton News Record, 2013-11-06, Page 1616 News Record • Wednesday, November 6, 2013 Transplant recipient an excellent guest speaker for Londesborough UCW The news from Londesborough Brenda Radford LONDESBOROUGH UCW The Londesborough UCW held their October meeting the evening of October 21 in the Church hall. Mike Sullivan, who is currently the Western Ontario Regional Director with the Canadian Transplant Association, was the guest speaker. He is also a volunteer with the Trillium Gift of Life Network, the organization that is responsible for the process of receiving donations of organs and tissues as well as for promoting organ and tissue awareness to the public. Mike explained what parts of the human body can be donated and why registration as a donor is important. And he talked about common concerns surrounding being an organ donor. In Ontario at any given time approximately 1500 peo- ple are waiting for an organ or tissue donation. One donor can conceivably save benefit eight people. Unfortunately not all will receive the organ they need in time. Mike is one of the lucky recipients. In 1995 Mike was expe- riencing shortness of breath and was diagnosed with dilated idiopathic cardiomyopathy and was put on a regimen of 18 to 20 pills a day and received a pacemaker. In 2010 he began testing to see if he qualified for a donor transplant. Although he qualified it wasn't until February of 2011 that he received his new donor heart. After two weeks in hospital Mike was released but lived in London for the next three months to be close to the hospital for testing, frequent blood work and post op procedures. As living proof of the importance of donation, Mike encouraged all the ladies present to consider registering for the program. During the business portion of the meeting it was decided to make annual donations to the Goderich, Clinton and Seaforth hospitals, the Food Grains Bank, Camp Menesetung, the Huron - Perth Resource Centre in Mitchell and the Londesborough United Church. Recognizing and remembering the shut-ins and post secondary school stu- dents connected to our church was dis- cussed. Also a number of year-end acknowledgments were agreed on. The Christmas Concert has been scheduled for December 19. Harriet will make up the treat bags and Barb is looking for participants for the program. Volun- teers for the lunch following the concert are needed. At the most recent meeting of the executive the need for changes in our UCW was recognized. As a result a sur- vey was drawn up and circulated to ladies in the congregation for some direction for the future. They hope eve- ryone will take time to complete this survey before the November 18 meeting. The Christmas Pot Luck will be held on November 18 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Donations will be received that evening for the Women's Shelter and the Room to Grow program. ET CETERA Wow! Wasn't it a treat to wake up to sunshine on Sunday morning? It was a promise after all that rain and wet of a few days of better. Have you bought and are wearing your poppy? Perhaps you will consider attending a Remembrance Day Service at one of the cenotaphs in our area or watch the service from our nation's cap- ital on television or, at the very least, pause for a few moments at the elev- enth hour on the 11' day to remember. Members of the Blyth Legion Branch 420 and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary were present at Londesborough United Church on Sunday, November 2 to con- duct a Remembrance Day Service dur- ing the morning worship. Bagpiper John Jewitt was part of that honouring service. The official board of Londesborough United will meet on Wednesday, November 20 beginning at 7:30 p.m. HULLETT CENTRAL PUBLIC SCHOOL Courage is the character attribute being given emphasis at Hullett Central during November, an appropriate char- acteristic as the country remembers our armed forces. Students from Grades 7 and 8 will attend the Blyth Legion Remembrance Day Service on Monday, Nov. 11. The rest of Hullett pupils will be holding a service at the school at which the public is welcome. Report cards went home with pupils the last Monday of October. As a result teacher/parent interviews are sched- uled for this week, Friday being a PD day. Just two full months into the school year and staff is looking ahead to next fall. It's time to register for Kindergar- ten. Hullett will hold a "Calling all three year olds" day on November 18. One can call the school for more informa- tion on how to attend. A parent group has stepped forward to oversee this year's yearbook. So if you see the cameras out during activities, it's so the various pages can be set up following events. This will save panic next June. clintonnewsrecord.com 35th Bayfield Lions Joe Brandon Memorial Trout Derby 2013 Sponsors • Albion Hotel • Bayfield Anglers Assoc • Bayfield Garage • Bayfield Village Inn • Bluewater Restaurant • Bill Rowan • Bill Steensta • Boston Pizza • Brandon's Pro Hardware • Brian Coombs/ReMax • Bud Langley • Canadian Tire • Edward Fuels • Fish On Bait & Tackle • Gary Brandon • Geo Tec • Goderich Bait & Tackle • Goderich Community Credit Union • Goderich Honda • Harveys • Home Hardware • Huron Tractor • Lake Huron Chrysler • Lakewood Gardens • Lloyd Huffman Please shop whenever possible at these to the Rainbow Trout Derby. • Michael's Pharmacy • Micro Age Basics • McDonalds • McGee Motors • Nip & Tuck • Out of the Blue Seafood • RBC Clinton • Shoppers Drugmart • Strickland Motors • Subway • The Docks • Tim Hortons • TSC Stores • Walmart • Zehrs WINNERS (heaviest trout) 1st Place - Daryl Howard - London - 8.54Ib 2nd Place - Brad Bernard - Varna - 8.09 Ib 3rd Place - Greg Lambourne - London - 7.88 Ib Largest Salmon Nathan Oldham Goderich 13.801 b merchants who donated generously Thank You, Bayfield Lions Club 23TAXapai jiSSe[ d N 3 o 3 O QCO O 7 eDQ O Q CD s -o o a v 3 Q
