It was a big night for businesses in Clin-
ton at the Business Community Excellence
Awards Saturday, November 2 at the
CHCC. Five awards were handed out to
outstanding business and community
members who have been making a differ-
ence in Clinton and Central Huron.
Excalibur Insurance Group took home
two awards for the evening; the Healthy
Communities award and the Business of
the Year. Owner Jeff Roy, one of the night's
emcees, was taken by surprise twice over.
The Healthy Communities award is given
to a business or organization that makes
the municipality a healthier place to be,
while the business of the year speaks
for itself.
However, it was Bee Cooke who stole the
show when she accepted the Lifetime
Achievement award, which is given to an
owner/operator of 15 years or more within
Central Huron.
Cooke received a standing ovation as
she took the stage to accept the award, and

kept the audience laughing as she talked
about her business days and her "two
years" on council that turned into 15.
Cooke said finding new, young people for
the business community was of utmost
importance.
She herself retired at 85, saying she
wanted to live a little - having morning
coffee every day.
Dan Groves of Groves TV and Appli-
ances earned the Retail, Trade and Profes-
sional award. Groves is currently in the
process of expanding his family -run busi-
ness, recently purchasing the Dinner Bell
on Huron Street to make room for his
growing enterprise.
Community service just comes naturally
to Kinsmen Dave Hanley. Hanley won the
Citizen of the Year award for his dedication
to the community, saying he is very encour-
aged by the manyyoung members that are
enthusiastic about joining service clubs.
The final award of the night went to the
BIA board member who donated their
time to making the BIA a better place. The
BIA Board of Management voted on the
award, recognizing Michael Russo as the
winner and a longtime supporter and
leader on the Clinton and Central
Huron BIA.
The BIA is undertaking a strategic review
this month, and for the coming year is look-
ing
ooking for a time investment from all mem-
bers. Roy gave a presentation after dinner,
asking for five hours of volunteer time from
each member. As an example, this year's
Amazing Race took about 1,200 volunteer
hours to put together and nm.
