Clinton News Record, 2014-10-29, Page 7Wednesday, October 29, 2014 • News Record 7 Ontario Child Council displeased with letter from Ministry of Energy Health Stud Make a difference in the lives of children and youth: say'yes' to participate in the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study and School Mental Health Surveys. The 1983 Ontario Child Health Study told us that 1 in 5 children and youth experi- enced serious mental health challenges. This estimate is out- dated as is much of what we know about child and youth mental health in Ontario. The 2014 Ontario Child Health Studywill tell us about the men- tal health status and needs of children and youth living in Ontario today. From October 2014 to May 2015, Statistics Canada will be inviting 7,000 families with children aged 4 -17 years to complete an inter- view in their home. At the same time, McMaster researchers will be conduct- ing School Mental Health Surveys in 240 Ontario schools to help us learn new ways of promoting and addressing student mental health needs. Together, these studies will be the first of their kind in Canada to examine the influence of family, community and school environments on child and youth mental health. The results will be used to develop programs and ser- vices to improve the mental health of young people in Ontario. Results from the 1983 Study were partially responsi- ble for over 3 billion dollars of investment in federal and pro- vincial programs and services, resulting in the creation of programmes such as the Ontario EarlyYears Centres. Participation in the 1983 Ontario Child Health Study was over 90%. Make sure you are heard in 2014 as well. Let's make our province a better place for children and youth. If invited to participate, please say 'yes' to the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study and School Mental Health Surveys. For more information, please visit: www.ontario- childhealthstudy.ca. Tara OSMer Tara Ostner The Clinton News Record In response to a letter that Central Huron council sent the Ministry of Energy regarding the Green EnergyAct, Bob Chi- arelli, Minister of Energy, attempted to address some of council's concerns in his own letter which was discussed at the Central Huron council meeting on October 20. In general, the letter describes measures that the provincialgovemmenc it govemment claims it is taking to ensure that munici- palities have the ability to pro- vide input when it comes to the development of renewable energy products. Chiarelli ends the letter by stating the following: "We believe that the Green Energy Act and its regulations have been a success, and have helped establish Ontario as a North Americanleader in clean energy. We have no plans to change this course of action. That said, we welcome and That said, we welcome and appreciate the involvement of our municipal partners in these crucial decisions about our electricity grid." Councillor Metzger chal- lenged the letter. He stated that he does not see the success of the Green Energy Act and pointed to the cost of power in Ontario as an example of why. Metzger went on to compare his company located in Ontario to his company located in the United States and explained how associated costs were sig- nificantly associated costs were sig- nificantly lower in the United States. 'Am I happy with this response? Absolutely not," Metzger said in reply to the ministry's letter Councillor Anderson then asked whether the clerk or CAO could write a further let- ter to the Ministry of Energy on behalf of council by the specified deadline and, at the end of the discussion, it was agreed that this could be done. Mayor Ginn offers brief update on Bluewater Youth Centre Tara Ostner The Clinton News Record At a recent visit to the Blue - water Youth Centre located just outside of Goderich, Mayor Jim Ginn learned about some of the preliminary develop- ments concerning the decom- missioning of the centre. He explained these developments at the Central Huron council meeting on October 20. As Ginn said, "it will be a full year before they're fin- ished their work on site."
